I've had a basic membership on there, and up until I received the below I didnt realise that it was more of a "Have a look around and give us some money" setup

The following changes will be enacted on January 12th, 2009 at 00:00 GMT:

1) You will have access to the Nikonians Galleries with 20 MB of space for your own photographs.
2) Your membership duration at the current, free Basic level will be 25 days.
3) Full access to our forums will be granted to members on Basic level or higher. Unregistered members will have limited access only.
4) You can upgrade at any time during the next 25 days to Silver or higher.
5) During this Basic level re-adjustment transition we are making available a limited time discount upgrade opportunity.  By using the voucher code SjB-20091u within the above mentioned term, you will receive a 20% discount on a Silver membership ($20 instead of $25 USD). The voucher is valid until January 26th, 2009 at 00:00 GMT.
I'm not a fan of pay-to-use sites or forums per se, but there seems to be enough time to see the areas I previously couldnt and make a call on whether there's any value in paying $20

Interested in others thoughts, especially anyone who's already paid up

You're right, they're going to 'pay only' soon. I suggested a solution like PH (some advertising to cover costs) but in a nice reply Mr Nikonian made a fair case for not doing so.

I don't use the site much and if I do it's more often giving advice than asking for it, so I'm unlikely to pay up, at least for the foreseeable future.

It seemed like reasonable value when the £/$ rate was at a better level. I think I am "silver" at the moment and I've enjoyed joining in with competitions on the forums et cetera. Plus, I got an awful lot of great techie detail anyway from the lens forum when I was swapping lenses and the D1/2/3 forum since I changed body. Admittedly there's not much more than you can get on "free" sites.

When people have "bothered" to contribute little bit of dosh I feel a bit happier to try and help if anyone has any questions or problems too - makes you feel that they might be a little more serious; you know how it can be when week after week the same or similar questions are asked on interwebnetsites...

Always found it a very useful resource as a visitor... but seems today I'm no longer allowed to visit without creating an account. It's not clear if I can sign-up and remain a free user? Not particularly inyerested in registering on a commercially run forum frown

Read the T&Cs and it looks like they lay claim to all rights on posted images http://www.nikonians.org/html/about/terms_of_use.h... - unless this is fairly standard for forums/sites? Thinking about it... is it similar here on PH?

Well done for spotting that, no wonder it's getting harder to get paid for photography. Everyone's "legally" nicking everything!

They're not doing much different to numerous other sites such as photo hosting sites. They work on the assumption that people don't read the small print!
