Having recently picked up an EOS40D to replace my aging 300D, I now have the ability to choose up to 3 custom settings.

I used to use the basic modes but have recently got my head around the M, AV and TV modes with differing levels of success.

Are these custom settings just a gimmick or do anyone use them regularly?

If so, are there any recommended settings and uses for them?

I wouldn't bother with them as they take too much of the user input away from you. If you can grasp Av, M and Tv and know when to use each that's enough.

I don't bother with mine, only use the M.

Do you guess exposure or use a lightmeter?

Can normally guess (90% of the time), take a test shot or two the other time.

Depends what you can set, I think its everything?

Would love a mode with MLU and timer, ISO 100 , f8 at the touch of a button...

I have a lens that wasn't designed for use on an EOS camera, so I have a set of custom settings I use for that specific lens - just dial it up whenever the lens is on the camera. Saves me trying to remember what alterations I need to make to the meter readings to get it to expose correctly.

Thanks, I think I'll just stick with trying to master the basics first.

Yes you can smile

I use the customs settings all the time on mine. eg.

One is set up with MLU etc, for slow shutter shots.

One is set up with autobracket etc for HDR shots.
