Read the manual. Remember that digital pictures are free to take so just get out and practice.

Get a hang of how exposure works, what makes it go.

Understand how the meetering works and when its going to get it wrong.

Dont be afraid of sticking it on a creatvie/manual setting and just shooting away playing with the settings.

Welcome to DSLR-world smile

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_flash :
"Fill flash is a photographic technique used to brighten deep shadow areas, typically outdoors on sunny days, though the technique is useful any time the background is significantly brighter than the subject of the photograph."

Basically, if you want to illuminate mainly by flash (like in your example) it may well be worth inventing in a proper flashgun.
The Canon Speedlite 430EX II ( £175.19) would probably be a good place to start, or the Canon Speedlite 580 EX II ( £293.60) if you're feeling flashy (I'm so funny rofl).

Cheers.

Fill flash means using the flash to "fill in" dark areas of a photo rather than using it as the primary source of light. For example you might do this when taking a photo outdoors where the sun is behind the subject causing it to be under-illuminated compared to the rest of the scene. I wouldn't worry about it yet; flash photography is quite a complicated thing to master.

In even simpler language, flash is generally crap unless you know how to use it (and have the proper kit), and most of us don't.

I avoid using flash at EVERY possible opportunity. When I HAVE to use it, I make sure that it's not pointing directly at the subject at full blast.

Because you had you camera sideways as you took that photo, the flash was offset to the side a bit (I can see by the shadow). Hence it turned out pretty good!

You can get into the 'settings' and reduce the power of the flash which will help.

Good luck

ETA

Pulling a photo of mine from another thread... If I'd used an onboard flash to take this it would have been 'off the scale' rubbish. So I used a tripod and a slow shutter speed - not always possible, but if you don't have posh flash kit, it will get better results. This was taken with a 200 watt bulb and a mirror on the other side to balance out the light. An extreeme example I know, but built in flash is to photgraphy what the Morris Marina was to good car design.

I don't know about everyone else, but I've learned mainly through experimenting, and occasionally looking stuff up on the Web, or if I'm really stuck, asking on here.
