I've been after a decent compact forever now and can't bring myself to want anything on the market except one of these.

D-Lux 4

I can't really afford one but I've got that itch. Someone convince me that it's not a good buy!

This seems to be quite popular at the moment. I believe it is a tad cheaper.

Because it's 98% Panasonic with a very expensive badge on it?

But the Panasonic doesn't say Leica on the front...

If there were one place I thought badge snobbery would be ok it would be PistonHeads! wink

It's on the lens ...

Wonder if you can get them de-badged?

I bought the panasonic version and im very happy with it.

As long as you understand the limitations of the smaller sensor, especially that higher ISO settings are quite noisy. You also wont get the same depth of feild as you can get on an SLR.

I think the LX3 is one of the best point and shoot cameras that you can buy. I dont find the lack of zoom a problem and the wide angle lense is great for landscapes and buildings.

Oh, and it does not say Panasonic on the camera, it says Lumix biggrin

eek

Two M8s!?!?!? That's just greedy. Send me one immediately.

Despite it being clearly almost entirely the same as a Lumix but twice the price, I still want the Leica. Itchy trigger finger is in full effect, I suspect the bag will be heavier to the tune of one D-Lux 4 by christmas day... Present to myself!

smile

edit - if you don't already know, take a look at what an M8 runs to... my comment might make more sense then!

Let's be honest, it was a forgone conclusion from the outset.

Luckily I have a wonderful wife who made the decision very easy by buying the camera for me! cloud9

Waiting for the battery to charge now....

Almost double the price for a badge which will only make it more stealable.

Mad. Could have had a sigma dp1 or DMC-G1...

I'd rather get robbed of the Leica than my other kit bag. If I want to carry a big camera around I've got a D200 so the DMC-G1 is worthless to me. The Sigma looks like a nice bit of kit but with a maximum aperture of F4 it's not really in the same league as the Leica's F2 lens is it?

good stuff, they are sexy little things

enjoy it.. just watch the noise.. i think most people only use them up iso200 or below

I fancy a minilux again actually. Keep menaing to pick one up off ebay. Had one many moons ago and they are an incredible little film camera. One of the sharpest P&S's ever made along with the contax. Too all my honeymoon pics with it.

Thanks Jackal!

I was planning to put it through it's paces against the D200 to see what noise is like. I don't like using the D200 over ISO200 either so I'm used to that.

One thing about Leicas is that they appear to hold their value in an improbable way for digital gear. I was watching some D-Lux 3 auctions on ebay that were finishing higher than the new price, madness.
