Hi guys,

I'm confused & in need of a tripod so thought I'd ask here smile

I've got a Canon 350D & am off to see the northern lights this xmas so to try & get some shots, I'm going to need a tripod. Any suggestions? I have no idea what to look for.. I'm also skint at the moment so it needs to be as cheap as poss but still do the job.

Spotted this : http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.as... which looks a pretty good deal, catch is I'm not sure on the bolt size for the canon. After a bit of googling.. looks like it might be 1/4" 20 thread where as the tripod is 3/8"

So.. will this not fit a UK 350D? And if not, any other suggestions?

Cheers!

Not quite as simple as that - when you buy a posh tripod like a Manfrotto the legs and head are two seperate bits - so on top of the tripod you found you also need to buy a head (the bit that swivels and holds the camera). That will take a quick-release plate which acts as the go-between between tripod head and camera.

At this point we need to define the word 'budget'. Often used in other areas to define a limited and usually small amount of money, in photographic circles it is simply the amount you have to spend to get the kit you want...

ETA Actually I think I just came up with Simpo's Third Law of Photography hehe

'Budget' in photography is usually calculated as such:

Budget + 50% x 2 = actual spend

Hope this helps wink

If that is true, then then following is also true:

Price you tell your other half the kit cost = Budget/3

Thats fine till she gives you a grand and wants a 5D, 70-200 2.8L IS, 300L and a 100-400 5.6L just like yours, laugh.

yes

Or if it's a really high priced item, knock a nought off the end, and divide by two... wink

My missus still thinks my 1Ds cost approx £300 angel

I recently bought this from Jessops and I am very impressed (so far). It's light and sturdy and even comes with its own bag with shoulder strap. Good bit of kit!

Best ide I think is to go into your most local Jessops or whatever photographic supplier you may have near you that has a good range of tripods with your 350D and your longest lens and try some out.

Look for how rigid the tripod supports your gear (obviously) but also look for how the controls operate (are they smooth, operate quickly and smoothly...etc) and if you're going to walk around for hours, is it easily portable and light enough?

You might want to go home and think about a shortlist before buying too. I know this is a bit naughty but you could see what price you see for your choices online and see if the dealer will negotiate....

Bizarrely I do. However, she does have control of the finances so she'd soon realise if I spent a couple of grand and told her it was a couple of hundred!
