I have been trying to connect my 350D to my laptop so i can do some remote shhoting.

But Vista will not let me update the device driver to the latest canon one and insist i use the microshaft one.

When opening the remote capure app it comes up and says it cannot find my camera, even though i can see it in the device manager

any advice please

We use EOS Utility for remote capture to shoot tethered in our studio sessions and have given up on Vista for it - it just doesn't work reliably if at all.

As such, all our capture laptops have been put back to XP and now everything flies. (It also works very well on our MacBook Pros...)

My recommendation is to ditch Vista - we got to the point in recent sessions where we went back to card swapping for reliability.

Sorry I couldn't be more help...

Steve if you have vista did you install the drivers from the original shipped CD or did you download the latest ones?

tbh I never install anything from CD, instead I create the required registry keys and install the "updates" from the cannon website. Dont try to install on Vista from the original CD

Cant get it to work on XP either..

I have downloaded the new drivers from Canon, But on VISTA i get an error saying cannot find compatible device.. Vista wont allow me to use the canon drivers.

On XP it all installs fine, i can get so far but i am now stuck on a ever so helpful error message that says..

" To use this function, set the [communications] of the camera to [PC connection] and reconnect."

But i can connect and change the data/time and owners name but not shoot any photos..

The main reason i wanted to use this was so that i can do long exposures of the stars/moon etc. Just trying to get some practice in before some really clear cold crips nights come in!

Not at all, my experience in my day job says otherwise... Microsoft generally are having major problems encouraging Vista deployment with major corporates sticking with XP and having no reason to upgrade. A lot of them are planning to skip Vista altogether and go straight to Windows 7.

Mine won't work at all on Vista 64bit, known issue apparently. I have to put it on printer connection in order to copy photos across as it flat-out won't recognise it on PC Connection.

It got to the stage where I had to put an XP virtual PC onto my work laptop to get around it and use the tethered shooting functionality.

I'm intrigued, could you give me a very brief summary? Are you going to be doing timelapse stuff? Long exposures?

Works on my Vista (and I hate Vista being IMHO the most unstable platform I have used so far). The only thing it really doesn't seem to like is any kind of auto launch when a camera is selected. Even if this option box is ticked.

Auto launch doesn't work for my Nikon or Canon camera / software combinations. For Canon Capture or DPP I have to launch the program with the camera connected for it to find the camera.

And it works OK with a fairly old camera now (1DS Mark II).

will be starting with long exposures. once i have a feel for shutter speed etc then i will be going for time lapse stuff. Luckily my telescope is motorised and tracks the sky so should be able tp get some reasonable results
