Hi all. Does anyone have a suggestion of some tripods to look at for a Canon G9? I currently have one of these, which is fine when there is a surface to put it on, but not so useful when it comes to being out and about:

What I'm after is something lighweight, compact when folded up and capable of extending to a useful height (say >120cm, with >160cm being extra useful). There seem to be a few choices that fold to about 45-50cm, but being less long would be useful.

Alternatively has anyone used a Gorilla Pod? My my little tripod isn't much use outside but perhaps one of these would be useful as there are often things about that you could attach one to.

I have a GorrilaPod for my compact and it is really good (no use on a SLR though). The flexibility is really useful when out and about. The screw is also attached to a little plate so you can quickly pull the camera off and leave the screw on for next time (rather than having to screw the whole tripod on as you do with lots of small ones). If you are after a small tripod then I definately recommend it.

The medium size Gorilla Pod works fine with my Canon S3 IS and Pro 1 units so should be perfect for the G9 as well. You might get away with the small one but the medium one offer some benefits (longer legs) but minor debenefit on additional size. Still light and portable though.

The big size is for SLRs but obviously not those with large lenses fitted.

There is a heavier duty gorillapod that is suitable for SLRs with bigger lenses on too. I've used mine with a 70-200 on and it's ok although no replacement for a proper tripod. However, for the OP, the smaller gorillapods are great.

Looks like Gorilla Pods are recommended then! Thanks for the feedback.

Is there a tripod out there that would fit my requirements or am I wasting my time looking for one?

Manfrotto 785b is 43.5cm packed, extends to 150cm working height, I don't think you can get something full height that will pack a lot smaller tbh.

7dayshop have an own brand mini tripod that is 34cm packed, but only goes to 67cm working height.

The Hama Star 75 packs to 42.5cm but only extends to 125cm.

Also Argos currently have a bag with travel tripod, which is 37cm/115cm. However it seems out of stock at all my local stores.

Thanks for your help. I had looked round the Manfrotto site but I struggled with the classifications a bit. That looks like it might be exactly what I'm looking for. smile
