Quite a few people on here will be members but for those who are not aware of the site its a pretty good place to make contacts at varying levels. If you stay out of the critique forum (where a lot of people are very self opionioated (that coming from me!)) the site is an excellent way to get access to models, make up artists, other photographers.

I've been on there a few months and it can be a bit slow going, much prefer it to Purestorm where the models tend to be even more arrogant/self opinionated.

If you are on MM or join, how about we use this as a central location to list links and as a resource for possible future discussions?

I'm on purestorm and I've never had anything rejected - and I'm far from good! hehe

Some of the stuff I've seen on there I can't believe ANYTHING's rejected (other than porn).

Good stuff! For me as a new comer I find MM fairly useful as a means to contact people

It's frustrating though - a model joins and you have to be singled out from all the crap weird old men just looking to get a woman naked.

I'm sure it's because yours would look so good there that they dont want the likes of me to be offended

They still wont take these amazing landscapes I keep sending them though...

i've not really had a lot of joy from MM. there are so many no-hopers!

for example, this 'model'. a mate of one of my co-workers. oh dear: http://www.modelmayhem.com/803924 (NSFW!)

I'm sure it's a great tool but it requires a bit of graft to put things together. If you have a half decent portfolio you can get models to test with from agencies for free. forums are good though. some of the photographers on there are really talented.

this is me: http://www.modelmayhem.com/scho

Yes! The girl I am working with at the minute is new to it all. She had been talking to someone that presented a "good" portfolio and a shoot was arranged in a remote location.

The girls smart though and always takes a parent with her (as she did last night) they are usually around but not obvious. Things were set up for her and this ohter photographer to do a fashion shoot in Avebury as tehre is a great willow tree there. He then started to ask what colour underwear was she going to take, how many changes etc and was after shots where she was grasping her skirt up or exposing a bit of "flesh"

She is 17 it worried her a lot so on advice she didn't go. I then looked at his profile and his shots were ok but all of women leaning forward showing buzwams. Its easy to see how some younger and for that matter any girls could be easily bullied into doing more than they are comfy with if they are in a remote place or if the photographer "threatens" to ruin the girls reputation. The girl was actually worried this guy would ruin her if she didn't turn up!!

The more you get to know people the more word of mouth spreads. The sites brilliant for people starting out to get to meet others I had been really struggling (as I dont advertise) to meet people who can work on ideas.

Keep at it, the site is also full of lots of people proclaiming to be the worlds greatest too.

The worst bit though is the comments from the other no hopers, which fill original no hopers with delusions of grandure;

"wow, love the shots, you'll do well"

"I predict this girl will be VERY big, a star in the making"

Stigmund - you're right though, especially like that that sounds overly dodgy in your example yes

When we're looking to do topless/nude etc I am always 100% open about the EXACT shots I'll be after before the shoot to make sure they'r ehappy to do such things.

Like everything really - there are skamsters out there.

Its a mine field, when discussing things with girls I always feel I should be apologising and saying I'm not like many of the others. Its a shame a few spoil it for the genuine ones

I believe they are refered to as BWACs (bloke with a camera) on MM, as opposed to a photographer.

I've only had trouble with one model on there who cancelled on me twice at the last minute claiming sickness (which sounded like a hangover). I shouldn't have given her a second chance really. There are other times that mails are exhanged then one of us will just get busy an the trail goes dead. I contact direct usually rather than posting a casting call as the last couple I did had about 30 replies and then you have to sift through them, though if I wanted a last minute model I would post a casting though.

It's important to make sure if you have models in your portfolio on there you link to their profile as I beleive models will contact other models you have worked with to check you're not a pervert. Sometimes they bring a friend with them to the shoot which is cool with me, they help out with checking clothes aren't out of place and stuff. Sometimes they bring a boy friend who will sit looking pissed off in his car. Quite honestly it always suprises me that the first time I work with a model she will just turn up on her own but she may have checked me out before hand with other models.

If shooting TFCD I clearly state what they will get from the shoot before hand so there is no confusion, usually this consists of the shots that I have edited (web and full size) and JPEGs of all the other shots. If there are any shots I haven't processed that they like I'll do some for them (but not more than 10).

It's good fun I really like doing the shoots.

BTW I've never had any trouble with any of them thinking that I'm dodgy but I state that I do not shoot topless or nude on my profile and I don't. I guess fashion/editorial levels may not attract as much suspicion.

Now that's just rubbing salt in my wounds. I got rejected and they allow those to be published. They are out of focus, some taken with a pocket camera, lacking in thought, and no technical skill with a camera. Shocking.
