Hi,

I ordered a 40D (body only) from a local, large, well-known dealer. It has arrived as unbundled (from the double-zoom kit).

The inner plain-white box containing the body is not sealed. Furthermore the camera screen does not have a screen protector on it.

I have checked with Canon, who say that the body has not been through their service centre.

The dealer tells me that they sell all their 40D body-onlys as unbundled, as it's a cheaper way of doing it. They tell me it's not refurbished or returned goods. They told me all their rivals sell body-only's in the same way, however I have since spoken to 'A large express house' who tell me their body-onlys are not unbundled.

Am I being over cautious and suspicious, or should I return the camera? I was not told that it would be unbundled when I placed the order.

I was so excited when my 17-40 arrived yesterday, and now I feel somewhat deflated!

Thanks,
Sarah

I think you'd be within your rights to get a refund as it's not what you expected when you ordered it, it's like shops selling off crisps from multipacks seperately.

I think if the box has been opened and the product has not been used it is still classed as used.

From a personal standpoint I would never sell a product that had been opened or even damaged on the outer case, and I am talking about products that cost £20 wholesale not £500 retail !!

It does seem like somebody's tried it. Look carefully at the battery contacts - do you see any fine scratches/marks? (assuming you haven't tried it already of course!)

I have heard it said that some resellers open the box to check the contents, but that doesn't explain the missing screen film. What about all the bits and pieces in individual poly bags - have they been opened?

Most items are sealed, however the power cable is not in a bag at all, and the battery charger bag does not look brand-new, and is not sealed.

As the battery is in a sealed bag I am not going to open it.

Really angry as I would like to return the body, but cannot do so until Saturday. I don't have enough credit to re-purchase elsewhere on the same day and my credit card company will not increase my limit.

I have arranged for my husband to return the camera tomorrow.

The lady I spoke to on the 'phone claims that the 40D's never come with a screen film/protector. Can anyone confirm this, or tell me that their's did come with one? My husband is sure our 30D had one.

Thanks.

Don't worry! It's just rhyming slang for (JulianHJ's) 'wife'.

I was just dissapointed that I have a lovely looking 17-40 at home and no body to go with it.

Do you mean a "disposable" screen protector as in the type that you chuck away when you start using the camera, or a permanent one? If the former, then I am pretty sure my 40D didn't have one. Neither did it have the latter for that matter so to some extent my initial question was on the futile side of things.

I don't think my 40D come with a protective film over the LCD.

So long as your retailer is going to give you your money back without any problems, then at least you can go and buy one that you'd be happy with from somewhere else. It's frustrating but it will just be a few more days and at least you'll fell comfortable with it...

I can't imagine that Canon would be very pleased with an official retailer unbundling camera kits - if they all did that then it would mess up Canon's pricing policy.

I was referring to the disposable type, which most cameras, mobiles etc seem to come with. Maybe they were right on this point then. I wonder why Canon don't use them on this model?

The retailer claimed that Canon know they break the bundles. I sometimes see lenses described as broken from kits, I think they are generally offered at a lower price because of this though. The retailer said they use this method in order to offer the price they do - but at £569.99 I wouldn't call it an absolute bargain! It may be the last time I try and buy local & independent for camera kit!

The question is, did they tell you or is it stated on their website?. If not then you're entitled to expect a fully sealed retail box.

My 24-105L was split from a 5D kit. I knew this when i ordered and i got a good price.

For future ref you can find the shutter release count. See here for instructions http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index.php?topic=1...

I'd expect a few in testing the body at Canon, but not 1,000's

No, the website does not state it's unbundled, and I was not told on the telephone either. They seemed to think this was perfectly normal practice, and that I was being awkward and unreasonable in not being happy with the delivered goods.

Having re-read the thread, the fact that a UK power cable seems to have just been thrown in is screaming "import" to me...

Warehouse Express have the camera for a few pounds more than the cheapest price on Camerapricebuster...i know who would get my money.

You may find the serial number denotes the country the camera was destined for. For example, Nikon serial numbers begin with 8 for a UK body. www.planetnikon.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=471...

Grey imports are not the end of the world but you should have been told up front, because it can affect the warranty.

Is there any other way of finding out it is an import?

I would have ordered from Warehouse Exp. along with the lens, but they were out of stock on Tuesday.

Try calling Canon:

'If you are concerned that you have purchased or leased a grey import you may check with Canon UK ltd by quoting them the serial number of the machine, the Canon UK Ltd head office number is 01737 220000.'

Nothing (new) I've had from canon has been sealed.

Cant remember if the LCD had any protective film on.

Definitely worth a try. I can't think of another reason why the power lead & charger would not be in a plastic bag. Everything that came with my 300D and 20D was in a bag and the boxes were sealed. My 1dMK2N is "pre enjoyed" and even that came with all the original packaging.
