Hi guys , im considering buying my first dslr , i have used film slrs plenty and currently have a lumix bridge. The main use will be for trips away with mates on our mountain bikes (hence the lightnes of the lumix) around the uk and the alps etc , with plenty of action shots.
After a bit of reading i'm heading towards a canon 450 3.5fps- seems great value , but do you guys think that the 40D with its 6fps would be a wiser choice , anyone any experience of the 2 .

Cheers in advance. Rich

Ps sorry for the typo on the heading , I meant 450D.

I might sell my 450d with battery grip and kit lens (about 2 months old), just want to see what the 5d mk2 is like . . . . .

I know the 5d is way more capable than i am but if I could get £400 for the 450d/kit lens/battery grip (with 2 battery holders) i think ill spunk 2 grand on the 5d mk2

I'm half tempted to flog my 450d / kit lens & 50mm f/1.4 / bag / uv filter for a 50d......not sure if it's a sideways step. I've also thought of going the N. route too!

I went from a 350d to a 40d, both are better than I am smile

You will find the 450d is smaller and lighter and so that might work better for you. The 40d is heavier and bigger and so will handle the knocks a bit better. As usual you need to have a play with both... Then buy the 40d

I went through the same thought process a few months back and stuck with my 350d and purchased a few more lenses. Now i have bene practicing a lot more i am taking better quality photos. They are sharper/colours more vibrant etc. I am tempted with the 50d as the 350d with battery grip is getting a little awkward to hold with bigger lenses.

I will not trade in the 350d though i will keep both.

just to answer your question, the 450d is a great dslr, possibly the best you can buy for the money, im glad I bought mine.

but

as with anything, you get into it, you want more.

and the 5d has so much more, and that's the only reason i want it.

Actualy in had measured against my 350D thr 40D didnt feel any heavier at all, obviously its bigger.

IMO unless you want the live view AF tweaks the 40D is the better camera.

my 40d has live view (if you mean being able to compose through the screen rather than the viewfinder?) - which is great for macro stuff as you can zoom in on the screen to fine tune the focus.

so, there you go - no reason to get the 450d over the 40d now!! wink

(I think money should be the only limiting factor)

450D autofocuses with live view, something the 40D doesnt do is what I meant.

For action tho get the 40D if you can afford it.

I played with both and was disappointed (no offence intended 450D owners!) by the feel and size.
Even in my diddy hands it felt too small and I much preferred the feeling of the 40D; I had been playing with my dad's 40D beforehand.

I really wanted the 450D as it was a fair amount cheaper, but I knew when I had played with both, that it had to be the 40D.
Glad I made that decision! thumbup

In hindesight I should have gone with the 40d over the 450d when deciding what to buy. Although the 450d is good it just feels too small in the hand and a bit fidly. I'm not happy with the price drop now...I paid £520 with kit lens/ SD card / UV Filter and Lowpro bag. That little lot can be had for a lot less today.

That's to be expected with any mainstream camera.

You need to enable "AF during Live View shooting" which is in the C.FnIII Auto focus/Drive menu, #6.

Then, when in live view, press the AF-on button wink
