Hi guys, don't usually frequent this part of the site but this is the best place for the info!

I've got a Nikon D60 and I was interested in having a bit of a play with the old 'wireless' flash malarky. Now, i've just bought an SB-600 (which I needed anyway as the on-board flash is a little pants) BUT I can't seem to get it to fire remotely (i.e from the aforementioned pants on-board flash...) Is the only way to work these things to have it commanded by something like an SB-800 on camera?

I know that to get the full range of Nikons TTL exposure compensation and what-not you have to pair it up with one of the better flashes but is there anyway I can just get it to manually flash from the on-board? I'm aware that the results may not be great but i'd kinda like to have a fiddle with it before splashing out on another flash (which I may not use often enough to make worthwhile).

I've tried looking through the manual but its nearly as big as the bl00dy camera one!

Ta muchly,

Mark

There is no commander mode on the D60. If you want CLS functionality you have to use either the SU-800 or a SB-800 mounted on the D60. Or buy a D80.

That's pretty stingy of Nokin, isn't it? They design these systems and then make you pay extra for them in the "value-for-money" range!

How else would they differentiate their range and get people to buy their higher range models if they put all the features in their base models?

It would be like everyone getting a 5L V12 engine in their BMW no matter what model they bought.

Sorry to go slightly O/T but I'm thinking of buying one of these and using it with the 10-20.

Would anyone know if this would help to cover the lens at say 10-14mm (and get rid of that black half moon I keep getting with onboard flash?)

As I have both I can happily confirm for you that it will!

Good shout, thanks Dobbo

In which case Sparky11, if you want to recoup some of your cash back I'm probably going to be buying one soon anyway for my D80

(Hopefully I havent violated any forum rules there, happy to delete if I have)

Andy,

Thanks mate, but i'll probably keep it. In either case I would need to buy another one at some point to go 'off camera'. I might see if I can pick up a 2nd hand 800 off Fleabay If I can get one for around a ton.

Is there any other (major) differences between the D60/80? The difference in price bertween the two is pretty much what a new SB800 is worth!

No COmmander mode, Does the D60 have flash compensation? I guess not. Also no motor drive so AFS lenses only (IIRC), that's the biggie.

Thought I'd make he offer as I've been hankering after one for a while.

I have a D40 and bought a D80 as it was limiting in the lenses, and a few other things. I think flash is another one as well but I mainly use the D80 for everything and keep a 70-200 on the D40 incase of some rapid sniping opportunities
