Anyone have any experience of using the Cokin P filter system on a Sigma 10-20mm (DX format) ??

Was interested in getting the Cokin P system for xmas for gf - but looking at the holders and the wide angle holder suggests reduced vignette at 20mm. We both typically like shooting a lot of our photos at wider than this (10mm, on DX admittedly).

Will this cause vignette and other issues?

Thanks
Matt

There was a whole article about filter systems (eg Cokin, Lee, Kood etc) in Amateur Photographer last week. May be worth tracking down a copy. There were comments about the holders and wide angles etc.

just to add that the Lee range has a special wide angle mounting ring to bring the holder much closer to the lens than the normal adapter rings. Don't know if Cokin does the same

I found that at 10mm the filter holder becomes visible. Can't really comment about vignetting though as to be honest my eye isn't well enough trained to spot adverse effects caused by filters and suchlike.

ETA - this on a Canon 40D so crop sensor.

I had to replace my Cokin P system with Lee after upgrading to FF on my 17-40L. The Cokin filter holder became very visible at 17mm (~28mm on a crop body). At 10-20mm I would expect you to have problems with the Cokin holders. Lee on the other hand are much larger filters (100mm wide) which solved the problem for me. The only drawback is that although the Lee filters are far superior in quality to Cokin they are incredibly expensive. Stunning filters though. I'd certainly recommend them.

An example of the Lee ND grads at 17mm:

I did this for another PH'er a while back.

Sigma 10-20 @ 11mm

Sigma 10-20 @ 12mm

As you can see, bad under 12mm and pretty much invisible above.

If I need a filter at 10mm I just hold it with my hand, or bluetac it onto the lens smile

Oops, what am I talking about. 17mm FF would be about 11mm on a crop sensor. So yes that's just about what I'd expect too.

thanks everyone - especially dobbo. If >12mm gives that sort of result then I think this should suit her fine.

Dobbo - just to clarify - which filter holder were those shots taken with? The Cokin P400 P holder? or the Cokin BPW700A P Wide Angle Holder ? Or something else?

Standard P series holder, not wide angle. Part of the Cokin P series ND grad kit.

If you turn the holder horizontally you can shoot at 10mm with slight vignetting in the corners.

This is actually what I do for rigshots! However for obvious reasons it doesn't work with ND grads on landscapes.

I find it a minor issue at 10-11mm , fine after that.
