Discussion
Firstly I must say that I am a complete Video novice - stills are usually my thing - but have bought Mrs Noggin a video camera so she can record and edit film of Noggin Jnr and send them to the granparent's on a DVD.
I bought a Canon FS100, and imagined ( perhaps optimistically ) that I would have all I needed to do the editing -
an SD card & reader - a Mac loaded with iMovie, some blank DVD's. Having uploaded a few minutes of footage to the Mac, I find that iMovie doesn't seem to recognise the files. If I try to drag & drop them I get an error message saying
" the file could not be imported : the file Macintosh HD users/desktop/nogginvideo/MOV001.MOI can't be imported ; Quicktime can't parse it : - 2048 "
If I try 'file - import ' the files are greyed out.
Any idea's??
TIA.

OK... Just done a little google search, and it looks like you may need to transcode the MOI file to something that iMovie will touch. here's a thread on Macrumors that may point you in the right direction. It's worth registering with the support forums on Apple, or Macrumors when things like this come up...

Can't you just connect the camera using USB or Firewire to the Mac and import the images that way rather than faffing about with the card reader.
Then flick the switch on Imovie's mai page to the camera function (from the scissors icon).
Probably, but I wanted to get into a 'workflow' where I take the card to my studio and leave a fresh card in the camera so I don't have to carry the camera ( I cycle to work ) . I guess I would have the same issues with the type of file however i upload it (?). Then flick the switch on Imovie's mai page to the camera function (from the scissors icon).
the later versions of Imovie will download them but needs the other files to do so, it needs to be done directly from the Camera via USB. the version of imovie you have only supports imports from Firewire or Quicktime file.
If you import them into a later version (imovie '08 v7.14) you can then save them in a format imovie 4 will read
