I need to get PS for the office, along with Illustrator, and need to know which one to get.

It's going to be used for relatively basic stuff so I'm assuming that Elements 7 would suffice - I also need multiple licences, probably 3 or 4.

Does that sound about right?

Thanks in advance.

I'd hate to say "yes" and then found out that you meant "basic" in a totally different way to me.

I only play with photos for web and printing. Photoshop CS3 is way more than I need - in fact Lightroom 2 does 95% of what I need, but I sought student status to bring the costs down and dip into PS from time to time.

I'm currently doing a course with several hundred others - some of whom will never be able to work PS Elements in a month of Sundays. Others are able to produce damn fine works of art.

By all accounts PSE is powerful enough for most, unless you're intending your workers to be spending several years on learning how to tweak the whole PS CS4 shebang into a profitable exercise.

If "basic" means you pooh-pooh what the experts do on Photoshopuser.tv every week, then there'd be a problem. But in the real world....

...oh and have you looked to see if you can get a trial download????

Adobe CS products become much more palatable cost wise when you buy a suite.

For instance, the CS4 Standard suite runs to £895 ex VAT and includes PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat.

Photoshop and Illustrator individually are £485 ex VAT each. With InDesign at £595 ex VAT it starts to look like a good deal, unless you geniunely can't find a use for those other products.

In that case, then Illustrator + Elements is going to save you money, especially when you scale to several licenses of each. In my experience Adobe don't do discounts, and there are rarely deals to be had on any of the flagship products.

I have been pleasantly surprised with how good Lightroom 2 is compared to my expectation that it would be too mickey-mouse compared to CS3. So much so, in fact, that I may even pay for it hehe

Open University "T189: Digital photography: creating and sharing better images". Just a short course, only earns 10 points, but I wanted something to ease me back in.... might head into a full blown BA....
