Hi, I'm in the market for a 70-200 2.8 vr. I'm happy with new or second hand, provided the lens is perfect working order. I've got the chance to make a offer on a 2yr old lens which has just been serviced and with a new vr element put in. What would you consider this is worth?

Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks, cliff.

Well, I haven't been watching the market but as they're about £1100 new, maybe £800? Find some similar examples on eBay and see how they go.

Earlier this year I got hold of one on Fleabay for £840 - no box, but complete apart from hood (including tripod foot I had to work out how to put together myself!), working, one external cosmetic mark. Bargain - I reckon.

So that's one end of the spectrum.

Gray's (can't get much more of a premium) will do you an "EXC" at £995 (in tropical grey) or otherwise from circa £1100.

So £900 in tip top condition has to be about the mark.

New VR element? Do they not last then? That'd a bit of a worry for me.

Same here. Why? Might just be a warranty issue, but a bit of a concern. £900 used to get you one new from HK tax free, don't know if it still will with the exchange rate fluctuations.

Thanks. Think I'll go new. The saving doesn't seem worth the loss of warranty and being able to walk back into a shop. Thanks.

You'll need that Vr, it's a heavy litle bugger.

ETA www.camerapricebuster.co.uk currently showing Warehouseexpress.com as cheapest at £1154 or try Kerso for a price.

Then again, I got a mint s/h Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for £350. No VR but I can manage without it, and it's my primary 'sniping' lens smile

Well actually you wouldn't want the 70-200 VR.

I mean, what good is VR? eh?

Not heard of VR failure being common. However I have heard of people who think the VR makes pics soft in some circumstances. Jochen from frozenspeed said that I recall and I love his motorsport shots. http://www.frozenspeed.com/

Very happy with mine though, but I'm just a dabbler with too many hobbies so don't put too much store in my opinion!
