hey guys

I'm looking into getting my first dslr and doing a beginners photography course at the local college. my dad uses an olympus E510 and I'm considering buying the same camera for ease of swapping lenses etc.

how do you think this compares to a similarly priced nikon/canon etc? ease of use as much as features?

cheers

I've never used the camera so can't comment on it directly...

Here is the dpreview of the E510

I'd think more about committing to the 'Four Thirds' system, has some inherent differences to the 'normal' cropped sensors ( APS-C) from nikon / canon / etc..

Plus the other advantage of Nikon / Canon is the vast range of lenses and accessories available.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Hi Matt.
Good lurking smile

I bought an Olympus E-1 (2nd hand) last year, and it's great.

However, what I have found is that the choice of lenses is severely limited compared to Nikon (esp) & cannon (& thus also more expensive). Also online help is far more plentiful for these platforms.

For me, I'm regretting not going the Nikon route, even though the camera is great, but as your Dad already has some lenses anyway, and the fact that he can help you, the above may not be an issue.

As a beginner, I think I would have benefited in getting a more popular brand for when I need to google something smile

Lateral thinking time - if you're going to borrow your father's lenses, you may as well borrow the body as well. Budget £0, home and dry smile

The Olympus guru .... http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/43/index.html. Well worth a read, the guy really knows his stuff, and if you do go the Oly FourThirds route the section on settings is pure gold. There is also a list of lens, http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/43/lenses.html , OK so not the mega lists that Canikon users can help themselves to, but covers most bases pretty well.

The E510 has been "upgraded" to the E520 and in twin lens kit form the old version is pretty good value for money if you can find a clearance bargain. Takes you all the way from old money 24 to 300mm.

Or get the body alone and the 12-60mm lens, which has got some very good reviews (but quite pricey). Then borrow dads 40-150mm if needed. You could share a teleconverter and a macro and be well sorted.

Really like my E510, but as I don't have any other DSLR experience to compare it to, not sure how valid my opinion is. One thing about the cut down list of lenses, is that it makes chosing easier !

bookmarked those sites ta beer

currently got the 40-150mm and also a 14-42mm. I reckon i need a wider lens and also a longer one aswell as these. may be worth buying just the body and sharing lenses....need to see what deals can be found on the net.
however, i'm sure theres plenty a beginner like me can learn with just those lenses before i go spending lots more money....
