all, any advice on the following would be appreciated

compact digital camera is a canon ixus II which i've had for nearly 5 years.
initially thought the screen on the back is on the way out as image on it will now often appear as a vertical coloured lines which flicker intermitantly, checked and its taking that as the photo too. so i think that the image processor (or whatever its called) is failing.

doesn't always happen - turn it on and i can work fine until you turn it off or it'll give up 5 mins or 30 secs or whenever into use or it'll start like that. doesn't seem to any way to stop it (turn off/turn on doesn't work) from happening. totally unreliable.

anyone experienced same thing?
do you know if this can be repaired economically?
should i bin and buy a replacement (Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 for example)?

Five years is a long time in the compact digital camera world.

IMO You're better off using it as an excuse to buy a shiny new toy.

Unlikely to be worth repairing.

Try sending it to Canon and see if they offer a discount on a new or up to date refurbished camera as an alternative to a repair

Had the same thing happen on my Powershot A75. Looked on the Canon website and apparently there was a faulty batch of CCD's that made their way into some models. Phoned them up and they fixed it free despite it being ~4 years old. Just had to pay to post it to the repair centre.
Bit late for you perhaps but thought it might be useful info in case anyone else stumbles across the thread smile
