Hi all,

Just got my new shiny Canon 450d with the standard lens kit.

Not an absolute beginner but haven't had much exposure to using additional lenses etc.

Just wondering what the thoughts or advice are on some lenses for longer range and macro photography are?

I have a budget of up to £200, but would like to stick to good quality but cheaper lenses until I find my feet.

I did spot a couple of Sigma lenses that seemed to do both, but I don't want to buy a lens that doesn't do macro better than the lens I have now.

Hope that makes sense!

Cheers

How about a 70-300 with a close-up lens on the front? Not sure if that would work, but is so it would give you long range with some 'macro' capability for little cost.

I think there's a Tamron 70-300 which has a 1:2 macro feature, it's ~£100 for my camera (Pentax mount) but wouldn't imagine it's much different for Canon.

That's one of the thought I had - specifically either the tamron you mention or the sigma?

I dont suppose you have any example pics do you?

I think I can find the Tamron for around £120 - but I get confused between the different mounts. Will a canon AF lens fit my 450d or do I need something else.

Thanks guys - its a bit like trying to do rocket science without knowing what 2+2 is just now!

Looks very nice - I found a Canon 55 - 250 EFS Lense for £179 but am wondering if its worth the extra over this lens, especially given that it doesnt have a macro feature.

Don't attach too much importance to the word 'macro' as applied to most lenses - it depends how desperate the marketing deaprtment is to flog them. Instead, look for the *magnification*. True macro is 1:1; pretend macro may be 1:4.
