Hi, just bought the Nikon 17-55 2.8. Need to get a UV filter for it. Are they all the same, or is one/brand practically good? If so which one. I have used Hoya before but just wonder if there's a favored one amongst users. I'm thinking of this one: Hoya 77mm SHMC PRO1-D UV. Any advice is welcomed.

This subject usually splits us down the middle.

One school: Protect the lens - helps with UV.

t'other school: You have a prefectly good lens, why put some cheap glass in front of it? Use a lens hood, it's all the protection you'll need. Can cause flaring when the sun is in the wrong place

I am - pretty typically - like luke warm water.

I generally don't use them, peferring lens hoods... but If I am using a Lee Grad system, I use the UV (It's attached to the mount).

The filter that you mention was the exact one I used on that identical lens.... and was happy with it.

Just avoid the cheap stuff.

ETA... I now use the Nikon L37c 77mm... on the basis that Nikon must know what works on their lens. (pricey though)

Am buying it mainly for the protection aspect, though I've never taken any pics without one so I don't quite know what the colour cast would be without it. Amazed to see how the prices for one item can vary so much from £30-£60 for the same filter.

I use Hoya Pro's. Cheaper on ebay that anywhere else.
