Volkszone Charity Calendar
Discussion
Hi guys
I've been involved in this calendar and as it is for Charity, I'm spreading the word. I've shot 7 months and done some of the photoshop work on some of the other months

The boys and girls at volkszone.com have been busy creating this superb 2009 Calendar.
All proceeds will go to Brad's Cancer Foundation and as every page has been sponsored already and production costs are already covered, every single penny raised will go directly to the fund.

The photographers, designer, car owners and ladies themselves all gave their time and expertise for free - so please support this worthy cause.

Thanks Emma, a couple of good points there
I was really pleased to do the shot top down into the Samba as I had that idea a long time ago, just never found anywhere suitable to shoot it. I was hanging over the top of the grandstand at the pod with the bus parked as near as we could get it. I'm not one for heights so it was a bit of a challenge

Sorry Nick, meant to reply to this the other day but life has a habit of getting in the way of PistonHeads for me lately...
This calendar looks great! If my calendar in my office wasn't still showing July, I'd buy one!
I assume you've posted it on Edition38 and all the other VW forums? I lurk on edition38 as I'm convinced one day I'll buy a Mk1 Golf...

BTW if anyone is interested there is a behind the scenes thread over here...

I'm guessing people don't want to trawl through the thread on the other forum so I'll put the behind the scenes stuff up here (copied and pasted so sorry if any references to people don't match)
As you may know most of the shoots (6 out of 7) I did were done on the Friday and Saturday of Action. As I knew I wouldn't have much time to do each one I decided to plan out each shot before hand. This also meant I could line up any props or anything we needed in advance too. Some of them didn't quite go as planned but here were my fist thoughts...

OK then
Let's start with Betsy
So I guess I broke the no glass at Santa Pod rule here
I had the hop tray from a previous shoot, I got it from ebay in the USA. I keep meaning to take it down to Mcd's drive through and use it  We shot Betsy down by the brick toilets in the pits and Shmoo had to ask the guy if he could wait to empty the toilet so we didn't die of the smell from the pump lorry
We started off the shooting from the front but realised we weren't making the most of the tattoos so moved round the other way. I normally take a cluster bomb approach firing off lots of shots in case eyes or closed or something. I was standing on steps.

Betsy did consider the tounge out but we decided against that in the end

I think you did great Betsy, cool fun shot
OK on to The Shmoo. Chequered flag packed and ready we set off down the pits. Jesus thought the shot would be better if the buses were burning out, we all agreed but also agreed that we didn't want our VW Action to end on the Friday when we were thrown out!
So Shmoo was left to furiously wave the flag to start the imaginary race

We tried another angle too but I think the calendar shot works better as the background isn't cluttered and the angle is more flattering.

I know Lisa was really worried about doing this but I think she did a fantastic job. Lot's of energy in it which suits her personality
Big thanks to Jesus and Maddog who I'm sure thought we were only using the buses and not them in the shoot!

OK, time for the next instalment but remember we need to sell some more calendars. If you've bought one already think about who else you can get to buy one. Can you take some to a club meet and flog them, or at work etc
Next up we have Savannah Beige Girl! These were shot in East London, Barking to be precise about 2 weeks after Action I think. Rad dubs and SBG has been to scout the location before hand which was chosen to go with the super cool ratty Square. Weather forecast was sketchy and we just got finished before the heavens open.

These were two we considered rather than the one that went into the Calendar

Well done SBG! Great work.
One thing that made me laugh about this was that Andy insisted on washing the Square first
Well as this seems to be the way it is going, maybe a few from 2008s only male entry. We had a bit of a false start on this one on the Friday at Action but finally got it sorted on the Saturday. Irony strikes at it was the Sunniest shot of the whole lot and it was for December! We didn't take long for this one just tried a couple of angles. This wasn't so good due to the angle of the sun and background clutter.

Chris' tattoos are epic...

Well done mate
As it's Friday I think we should have a photo of the lovley Cherry. We spent a bit more time with Cherry doing her shoot so have quite a few of her in various poses

Let's get some more calendars shifted and i'll get some more photos up

You know how it is, VWs, Hot Rods and Muscle Cars, lot's of people don't just drive them, it's a lifestyle choice. Along with that come other synergies such as clothes, hairstyles and tattoos. The VW and Hot Rod scenes are now much closer than the Hot Rod guys would ever like to admit! All the models for this calendar are not models as such just users of another forum who wanted to help a charity

We decided to only do these every other year due to the big push it needs for sales. The one above we went from deciding to do it to having all the shots done and ready for print in about 6 weeks, but then you need a good couple of months of hard sales to raise the money. What we should be doing is shooting 2011 now so it could be sold through the show season next year.
This was one of my favorite shots I've ever taken though, as I'd had the idea in my head for so long it was great to see it come to life...

I keep meaning to do my own calendar. I'm thinking "Muscle Car, Car Wash", models, bikinis, sponge, soap, water and muscle cars. I think it could sell well

There was some good photography (and there's more to come for RoY) in the current one, I've enjoyed looking at it!

Cheers Andy

Is there a way to get prints of one of the pictures?
I could probably sort something out, which one did you want? Drop me a mail if you like nick@grantgb.com Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
