I have one of these:

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_detail...

(Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO for those of you with clickophobia hehe )

Is it a really dumb question to ask: how do I make it do macro shots or is it simply that it has a short minimum focussing distance?

TIA!

I don't have one, but it probably just has a short minimum focusing distance.

Some zoom lenses have a 'macro' switch that locks the zoom ring and lets you focus more closely, but I can't see anything like that on there.

Actually, technically, it's not a proper proper proper macro, as 1:1 = proper Macro

But hey.

Just put it into manual, focus on minimum distance and move the camera in and out of the subject until you get focus.
