Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG (Canon AF)
Discussion
I used to have a non-DG version years ago, and it was a very decent lens. Ok, AF was a bit slow & noisy (compared with USM lenses) but it did do the job just fine.
ETA: but if you can stretch just a bit more, this is a much better lens and I'd definitely recommend it.

Had this lens before switching to the 100-400 IS USM etc lens. The quality was fine up to a point, a little below par at the far end or maybe I just had the DTs... For the money it's a lens you can definitely work with but you'll likely end up replacing it with a sharper or faster lens at some stage
after a little more research i am going to extend the budget and go for the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS (Canon AF). i think i would be happy to sacrifice a little zoom to add the Optical Stabilizer . anyone have any thoughts on this lens. IMO it looks god for the money (£249 from jessops)
