Hi everybody,

After several threads/posts on here mentioning the greatness of the canon 50mm f1.8 (mk2) I took the plunge today and bought one. The reason being I want to expand my photography alittle, all my work so far has been motorsport related. So there are 2 things I would like to ask,

1) I live in a bit of a dump called mansfield (you know, the place Rebbeca Adlington comes from) It has no redeeming features what so ever so any suggestions on what normal run of the mill kinda stuff I could try my new lens on? Or anywhere interesting to go and take pictures with out traveling too far?

2) Being abit of a newbie to all this photography lark can anyone give me some better explanations of DoF and aperature? Intresting ways to try my soon to be newly learnt knowledge of these. A link to a good sight with explanations for dummies wouldnt be unapreciated.

Thanks for your time and patience and also putting up with me piss poor spelling biggrin

I also bought a 50mm due to the great reviews from PH members. And have to admit it is a fantastic lens.

Re 1. I have a few clients in Mansfield and have visited the area many times, and don’t think it’s a dump at all! I would get inspiration from Flicker with a search: http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=mansfiel... Also, you don’t need to go out of the house to take pics. wink

Re 2. I found this site was fairly basic but intuitive. Aimed at Cannon but the same principal for all cameras. http://web.canon.jp/imaging/enjoydslr/part2/2Ab.ht...

And don’t forget to post up your pis for scrutiny. Good luck. smile

Edit: to add 50mm pic

Thanks paul thats a big help and mansfield really is a dump once you get to know the place lol....the town centre recently had a revamp which makes it look alot better but still by no means an inspiration for my photography lol

I think sometimes its a fear of getting stabbed n robbed if I go out at any time that would be more or less void of people that get in the way.

I have a suggestion, especially if you want to play in the house (I have two young kids and work stupid long hours - so I never leave the house), buy some close up lens adpators (only £3.99 a pop from 7dayshop) and try taking some mad close ups of ordinary day stuff.
You'll be surpised what fun you can have.

For a laugh, and in part to annoy my wife, I set up some Duplo figures in 'compromising' positions and took some close ups. Hilarious. I got close enough to fill the entire frame with just the eye of one of the Duplo builders. You could see he had a filthy mind, honestly...

I'll post them up sometime, when I get round to clearing my desk at work .. hah ha ha....

Flickr is good for inspirtation, once you wade past the stuff you don't like. Press the Explore button till you find something that makes you go 'wow'.

Lots of good stuff round Mansfield though. If you can get out and about then the parks of the Dukeries are nice e.g. Clumber. Further afield the Peak district is great.

Mind you if you think Mansfield is bad, try my old home town of Worksop. It died with the closure of the Manton pit and has never come back frown Mind you, neither have I smile

Blimey, Mansfield - I was born there. Is it really as bad as I read about now? I don't get back there much these days. I wish I had my camera last time I was there, top of Wood Street 6 or so girls none of them much old than 16 I would guess all shell suited up, 3 with prams all drinking cider and that was mid afternoon.

I would have thought given its reputation (assuming its still as it was) that a bit of street photography would be good - as long as you're feeling brave.

Also loads of nicer places not too far away, any number of stately home / ruiny type things, Newstead Abbey, Rufford, Hardwick Hall and a bit further a field Chatsworth etc etc, all really good if you can get up early. Misty conditions around Rufford or Hardwick are nice. Nice parks to Sherwood Forest around Edwinstowe / Ollerton, then there's clumber, wollaton etc. Plus you've got the peak district on your door step (with some pleasant drives to boot). There's nothing better than perching on the edge of Froggatt or Stanage and watching the world go by.

Bought one a while back but not had the chance to take many pictures with it. Really like it though!

Am thinking about getting this myself (on a 40D) although not sure it would add much to the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 I am also intending to purchase?
