After being fed up with wishing I had that bit more control over my P&S, I decided it was time to treat myself to a shiney new DSLR. Taking advantage of an offer, I went for a Nikon D40 with kit lens, a Tamron AF 70-300mm plus a bag and memory card. So far, I have been very impressed with the results, although I haven't really had the chance to use it any more than just messing around with different settings.

Here are some of the ones I am most pleased with, all C&C welcome of course:

1.

2.

3.

4.

The only problem I have had is in pictures with strong sunlight such as this:

How do I prevent the big spots of colour. I'm pretty sure it is not dust anywhere as it is different in each picture. My guess was a filter but I have no idea which ones would do the job so any advice would be great!

More will appear here once I get a chance to pick out the better ones.

that problem is lens flare, A lens hood should help you quite considerably but shooting directly at the sun is difficult to do and not get any lens flare.

I see. A hood came with the Tamron so I will definitely give it a try. Thank you!

No problem! smile

Don't forget that you can keep the hood on at all times, just turn it so its facing the camera and it will fit until you need to use it!

I think this photo is really good. What lens did you use to take it and I assume you were using a tripod?! I got a D40 a few weeks ago, not had a lot of time to use it as I just started a new job but hopefully soon I will be able to get stuck in and take loads of photos.

Thanks!
I suppose I cheated with that one in a way. Using the kit lens, I put the camera into "Close Up" mode, zoomed in (55mm I think) and snapped away until I got the one I wanted. No tripod, just luck I guess.

Oh right, thats not bad going then! I bought the same package as you, the D40 18-55, Tamron 70-300, 2GB memory card and a bag for £409. I was 2 days too late to pick it all up for £390. Recently bought a cheap monopod and wouldnt mind picking up a tripod at some point too. How are you finding the D40? I noticed that it seems not to handle bright sunshine well, though the days I have taken it out were the hottest days of the year so it was really bright.

You should still get the £40 cashback too though?

The bright sunlight has been the only real problem so far, but as mentioned above, a lens hood should help. I just need to learn how to work and use all of the functions it has. Oh and some interesting things to take pictures of.
I like the pictures of the dogs by the way!

Yeah I must sort that out before the end of this month - get my £40 back. Thats my one problem, having something interesting to take a photo of. There is only so many times i can visit the zoo !

My dog (moo) is use to me shoving my camera in his face, he just goes to sleep in the end. biggrin

I look forward to seeing some more photos from you.
