I ordered myself a book from play.com called Nikon D40/D40X Digital Field Guide by David D. Busch. I have received it today and had a quick flick through. Looks like some good stuff in there. Tells you all you need to know about the camera and all its settings and also give you ideas on what kind of photos to take and what settings you will need to get the same result. So far so good the only problem is im not a fast reader, i dont really like reading, but I want to learn how to use my d40 properly so I am going to have to take it one step at a time! I hope you enjoy your d40 and I would love to see some photos!

Is it a simple enough book to follow? I have limited patience and want to get going as quickly as possible.... I do, however, want to learn how to use my new camera properly...

My first non-auto photo - not a brilliant photo, but it's a start:

Hmmm, both of you do a lot better than yours truly with the same bit of kit... and then to think mine is being used 'professionally'... redface

OK, so 'photographer is notin my job description... phew biggrin

Ah well, I think the camera is indeed impressive for the kind of outlay... and I'm sure I'll improve given a bit more experience with it thumbup

I have not done the 'non auto' yet..I am building up to it biggrin The book does seem very easy to follow. It is all broken down into sections which are clearly defined in the book so you could just read up on the section you are interested in or need to know about. I would recommend it.

Nice photo by the way!

I think its a fab bit of kit for the money and it does allow you to build up a collectin of lenses etc.. which will then fit any nikon upgrade you decide to get in the future!

I blame a friend on mine on here who has "made" me buy it - my compact was rubbish and the alternative of buying an expensive compact meant that I might as well buy the DSLR - no brainer really.

I like taking photos, so getting a good camera was/is a must really. I look forward to taking more. Something better than this:

Edit: Book now ordered from Play.com biggrin

I've also got a book called "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson which seems to be a pretty good read.

What you ordered the same book I suggested??? biggrin Oh dear, now what if you think its crap, youll want a refund from me getmecoat I ordered mine on Tuesday, posted on Wednesday and got it this morning. It is small enough that you could probably put it in your camera bag..depending on how big your camera bag is obviously!

I figured that a generic book is good, but a specific book as well would be a help - there's some online stuff, but I prefer a book that I can carry with me.

If it's no good, I'll probably just get another smile

I agree, its nice to be able to refer to something while you are out and about. I think I shall have a good read tonight and then be brave and venture out tomorrow for a day of photography!
