I need a flash and am looking at the Nikon SB-800
All the reviews I've seen are very good, but it's not cheap.
Anything that would save me some bucks but match performance?
scratchchin

This is for a Nikon D40 (and possibly a D80)

Call me conservative but I much prefer the idea of having all the important stuff from the same company (budget permitting of course). Cameras and flashguns are damn complicated; god knows what they talk about when they're deciding exposure but they usually come to an amicable agreement.

I use an SB800 for much of my work and whilst it's not the most friendly interface, it gets the job done and one set of AAs will do most of a wedding (say 400 shots). If you want to save a few £, there's the SB600 - not quite as powerful and with some features missing but it may still be fine for you.

I use a couple of Sigma lenses but I just wouldn't feel happy with a Sigma flashgun. Odd but true!

Just got one, v. pleased with it.

Shortly it will be joined by a SB600 as a slave.

The Nikon flash system is very sophisticated and well regarded, and you probably won't find anything better for a Nikon camera. You need to decide what you want to use it for, e.g. the SB800 can act as a wireless flash controller - are you likely to ever want to play with that, or do you just want something that will give you better snapshots indoors?

The SB800 is a biggish, powerful, expensive, complicated flash. It has lots of nice features and will do lots of whizzy things that you may or may not need or care about. If you don't need the little bit of extra power and the additional wireless flash stuff, the SB600 does almost the all the same things for less money (including acting as a wireless slave) and a bit less size.

On the other hand, if you just want something small and light that will give better indoor snapshots, have a look at the SB400 - it doesn't do the wireless stuff and it doesn't have the power of the other flashes, but can still bounce the flash upward (although not sideways) and is much smaller, lighter and cheaper than the SB800.

Thanks for the good advice guys, much appreciated. yes

I'll go with the SB-800, it takes me into new areas that I want to work with, so I'd best not compromise.

So far I've managed to cut £100 off the price as well. smile
