...and have a few questions :-)

The packaged lens on the 450d is a significant improvement over the packaged 350d series, but if I should wish to up-grade, is there significant quality/choice out there from 3rd party lens manufacturers that provide for Canon's lens in-built stability management system? And lastly, would there be any reason to look at camera options that provide stability management in-built in the case rather than lens - i.e. any benefits on the former over the latter?!

Im new to DSLRs so I thought this would be a good entry level camera that will grow as my experience grows - if you know what I mean?! I come from a Canon 300 35mm background so the SLR philosophy is not new to me. Sorry for not mentioning Nikon for the 'Nikionians' out there - I was considering the D60 but I feel the camera does not support raw/jpeg adequately - maybe not an issue now but when I become more experienced I may regret not having this full functionality. I wont mention anything about the canon's ability to process at higher ISO's - may put the cat amongst the pigeons :-).

I would be interested in your views on lenses though :-)

I take it you have particularly shaky hands?! The only 'stability management system' in my set-up is me and it seems to work nuts

That's a new one on me. How do you mean 'does not support raw/jpeg adequately'? I know the D60 doesn't work with screw-drive AF lenses, but that's the only drawback I can think of.

I got one of the bundles this weekend.... lots of fun and spent most of sunday trying to work out all the features, still cant get the LCD to act as a view finder at the moment, but I will eventually.

Just waiting for the 2nd battery to go in the battery grip and a couple of 8-16GB SD cards, the shop I was in wanted to charge an extra £200 for one 16GB card... a massive markup.

Hopefully I will be ready for Bali in 4 weeks and figured out all the functions by then.

'Inevitably it's not all great news; as someone who always shoots RAW+JPEG I found Nikon's decision to retain the crippled 'Basic JPEG only' option when shooting in this mode frustrating (the Basic JPEGs are way too compressed for serious use).'

OMG! Why do you need a second battery for the grip? And how much did you end up paying for the cards?

Oh I see. Do you want to shoot RAW with JPG at the same time? You can still shoot RAW for serious work and Large Fine JPG for snaps if you want. (Whatever programme you use to process RAW files should show them as thumbnails so you can see what you've got)

It's not a feature I ever use, but everybody uses their cameras in different ways.

Thanks for that. I'm no expert but I just wanted to 'future proof' myself as even though I would not be using RAW+jpeg currently i may do in the future.

In body IS means cheap IS on every lens. It though isnt upgradable unless you swap bodies and has been shown to top out at 2 stops or so and isnt as good on longer lenses.

In lens IS makes the lens heavier and more expensive but can go up to 5 stops now.

Canons new kit IS lens is very good for a cheap lens. Its though quite slow f3.5-5.6, an upgrade (without IS) would be the tamron 18-50f2.8 (or the sigma equivelant) or for a lot more money the canon 17-55f2.8IS

I sugest you keep hold of the kit IS lens for a bit untill you know what you want to move to and have more experienc with it.

IMO the D60 is feature crippled and lacks AF on non AF-S lenses etc, it takes a good pic and is as good on noise as the xxxD canons, didnt know it had sucky raw+jpg.

BTW canons DPP software can process your RAW to a JPG exactly as the camera would (sure nikon software does the same) and something like Picasa makes dealing with RAW easy.

Not sure where all the battery grip talk came from - there handy if you do a lot of prtrait work and want 2 bateries, dSLR's typicaly get 500-700 shots per battery full charge.

The battery grip I got was specifically built for the EOS 450D, Although somehow I reckon its just a generic one and it also came with the 6xAA adapter.

Figured it was easier to get one of those then it was trying to charge the battery when i could just take some emergency AA batteries to tide me over when on holiday in the middle of nowhere
