Going to be doing RIAT this weekend and a Farnborough corporate day next week, tempted to hire a TC for my D70. I currently have a 70-300 5.6G Nikon lens which I found just a little too short on previous airshows.
Will that lens stand up to being used with the TC 1.4x ? I'll assume it'll be nice and sunny, but obviously the 'G' lenses are low budget, so worried that the images will not be clear or that it won't fit or something..

As Gemm says its really not worth it... If you have a faster lens then yes it would be better.
However you will loose autofocus for definate and as mentioned your viewfinder will be darker therefore less easy to focus.
I dont know if you've ever tried tracking a moving object with manual focus on a digital slr... Its not easy at all, your hit rate of in focus shots will be extremely low.
For the future if you go for a long lens look at something like the Sigma 150-500 or even the 50-500 (though this is a big heavy lens). You can pick the 150-500 secondhand for a good price these days and it has perfect focal length for an airshow.
