Nikon D40x - Any good?
Discussion
As a complete camera novice/virgin, I respectfully ask if anyone has any experience of the above camera. I've been wanting a decent camera for quite a while...my previous one is a 2 Megapixel crap olympus thing (snap shot type), so you can see my intrepidation...
I've not a clue about lens, apertures, timings etc, etc.
I would simply like to take a few good quality pics, with a camera that will last the distance and can be upgraded with len's etc as I progress.
I've found one for approx £300 with 18-55mm lens, bag, 4gb card, lens cleaner all brand spankers. I think this seems like a decent amount of money. I don't really want to spend any more, as I am a novice and I don't want to waste money on a camera with features/capabilities way beyond my own.
Any useful pointers would be good.

Well any dSLR sounds like it'll have features and abilities beyond your own, and mine lol.
If your not going to move of the auto settings an SLR is quite a hastle compared to somthing like a canon G9, big and bulky and lots of lenses. Unless your going to use the performance (say for sport) the low light abilities or want fast or extreem lenses you may be better off with a high end P&S.
Saying that the D40x takes decent pics, cracking sensor on it, it lacks a body drive motor/pin which means you'll have to stick to AF-S (more expensive) lenses , it also lacks features like mirror lockup, brcketing and Depth of field preview which are all handy especialy for landscapes etc.

If you want to learn, go for the D40X or similar. If you want decent photos easily without learning, I'd suggest a good compact - they will be better than your current one. But using a DSLR as a point and shoot is wasteful IMHO.RobDickinson said:

At the £300 mark I would be going for the Canon 350D which also takes decent pics and has all the things mentioned above (including not needing specific lenses). i have just recently got a uk d40 with standard lens, with 2 years warranty for £246 after cash back, bought a 50-200vr lens of ebay for £115 delivered, the camera is great, very responsive, instant focusing,3fps even on a slow memory card, the pictures look great,i use mine for motorsport and have not had any problems with focusing or shutter lag,at this price i am well chuffed with mine !!
