Hi all, not posted in here before, need a bit of guidance if poss, my two two lads wanted a camera for their 13th bithday , so of i went yeasterday to have a look , initial thoughts were cannon as i have a cannon 10D which i have had for a few years , i only have one lens for it and after looking round started to think if it would be worth up grading the current camera , which then raised the issue of which make, cannon again or switch to nikon, so we are all on the same sytem .

Anyway off we went and after looking at a few options i made the decision to go over to Nikon , i bought two D40's , with a 55-200 lens for the boys, i got a bit carried away and ended up looking at the D300 and the D3, I ended taking the D300 with a short 16-85 and a 70-300 zoom and have orderd the 80-200 f2.8 .

Now i have the kit home i'm starting to Wonder if i should have gone for gold and bought the D3 , i have the budget for it , and if so which would be the two lenses to buy have a shot zoom on order , which would you guys recomend for the wide angle option for general use .

Personally I'd stay with the D300 rather than going for the D3, as it has the same size sensor as the D40s so you can swap lenses between you all.

If you go for the D3 what are you hoping to achieve? (other than spending morewink)

If you use the camera professionally, then think about a D3, other than that, you'll probably produce great images with a D40 and the glass you have ordered...and it's a hell of a lot lighter than a D300.

Enjoy the D300 and stick with that it's "more camera" than you are likely to need for the foreseeable future unless you do turn pro...

Just a thoughtwink

D3, 28-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8

smile

Which is a st load of cash to invest. You can spend less by replacing the D3 body with a D300 and the 28-70 with a 17-55 f/2.8.

But if money isn't really a problem then... Go mental!

Thanks for the responces so far lads ,

Use wise i will b e useing it foar quite a wide range if uses normal home type use , kids , photos of the new pup, cars and bikes at track days le mans etc.

I would like to start taking photography up more seriously as a hobby, especialy now the kids have started taking an intrest.

I'v sold my Porsche a month or so ago and i am not going it to be repalaceing it with another car for quite a while so have a little spare to invest on the right kit , i don't want to spend the money now and regret i did not spend the extra in a few months time and more importantly before the wife spends it on other things. Dont get the wrong impression , its not a case of money no object , i just want to use the cash to the best effect .

Keith - I'd advise you to stay with the D300 rather than upgrade.

I have just upgraded to the D300 (from a 5y/o D70) and I do part time wedding / portrait photography.

It's a great bit of kit.

I'd get a 17-55 f2.8 "everyday" lens and the 70-200 f2.8 VR and you are covering most situationswink

Get yourself a decent flash (SB800) and then learn how to use the kit properly...

Off camera flash can be done easily, play with different modes / settings.

Remember with photography there is no right or wrong, it's all opinion hehe

Good luck, have fun & post results here for more assistance as needed.

rofl didn't have one in stock and didn't want you to walk away?

If you don't fancy buying from from Hong Kong, a quick search reveals a not much more money (after you consider postage from the far east) UK version;

I've had good experiences buying from PurelyGadgets in the past. They will also do you the 70-200 for a wee bit more than the link above, if you prefer buying from a single vendor.

Hit them for an SB600 or SB800 as well, if you are feeling saucy.
