Daughter wants a digital camera for her birthday - don't want 'owt too flashy or expensive (especially the expensive bit biggrin)

No other real wish-list other than 'pink would be nice'

Any suggestions?

I've got one of those Olympus shockproof ones for our 5-year-old. (Actually, I bought it for myself because it's waterproof, but the young man has nicked it...!)

Does the job nicely. We started him off with one of those kiddie cameras with the twin viewfinders and the handles on either side, but the display on the back is pants.

Don't know how much you want to spend, though? I think this was just over £300.

I'd have thought any decent point and shoot would be fine.

My 8 year old has taken great shots... in fact she was taking some good shots when she started using my camera when she was 4 -once you omit the pictures of every random object in the house she takes a shot of smile

My 2 year old also pretty good with a point and shoot too, so I wouldn't dumb it down too much, though my 8 year old's patience runs a bit thin on getting manual shots right with the E1, going back to the point and shoot.

How much do you want to spend? Some of the Canon Ixus are going cheaply on Amazon at the mo, they're more expensive for the 'ixus' brand, but they are slim, good and very cool. Just over £100 and you get a nice P&S which on auto is easy for a younger kid to use!

I guess about £100 would do the trick

I just got an IXUS 500 (5 Mpix) which takes perfectly reasonable pictures and appears quite solidly built from Ebay for fifty quid.
