Morning all,
I finally managed to get my new 40D into the "real world" and get some photos of the WTCC in Brno. Bugger me it was hard!!!!
I had a few lenses at hand including my s
tty 18-55mm kit lens as I'm still waiting for my bonus for a nice L lens, however I also have my 55-200mm USM f/4.5-5.6 to play with and I nabbed my mates 17-55mm f/2.8 lens (stunning).
All I've got to say is that it was bloody hard!!! Especially without any IS working at 200mm!!! Either way I think I need way more practice, and I'm most definitely getting IS with my new lens. I found it almost impossible to get a good sharp picture, however that's probably down to my photography skills.
Here are a few unedited examples hot off the press:

IS is totally irrelevant for Motorsports.
Get your technique sorted (and a monopod if necessary). Much more satisfying than blowing a load of cash on a stabilised lens and still finding your shots are not what you hoped for.
Try and find some better spots to shot from too. I don't know the Brno track at all (although i do know the city..hic!
) but there must be somewhere you can get closer to the action and a lower angle.

I'm not sure I totally agree with the IS being irrelevant....especially when working at 200mm. It's hard to keep a sharp picture.Get your technique sorted (and a monopod if necessary). The other problem was the track was pretty restricted without VIP passes so the three photos shown are the main straight and the corners are on the back end of the track.
Cheers for the input.
