Lens Protection
Discussion
Morning all
Planning on taking the camera on hols up to the north of Scotland and I'm expecting to take some shore line pics as well as some pics on the hills...
Question is what's the best way to protect my lens from sand and grit, would a filter do the trick or is there a better way...
Also while I'm here, I'm thinking of a new lens and top of the list at the moment is the Canon 50mm f1.8. A lot of my picture taking is of cars and people but I do like to take landscapes as well though the kit lens is pretty good for this.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good all rounder or is the 50mm a good alternative lens for cars and folks...
Cheers

I'm not an expert but I'd say that if you're after an all-rounder a zoom lens would probably be better than a prime lens for obvious reasons. However, 50mm is probably quite a good focal length for being able to photograph lots of different things, including people and stationary cars. I've recently bought the lens you mention becuase it seemed to a good way, possibly the only way, of getting a wide aperture lens for not a lot of money. The general optical quality is apparently regarded quite highly as well. It's not much use for landscapes though. It depends on what you've got already, what your priorities are and how much of a hassle carrying and changing lenses is to you.
