Need to get some spare batteries for my Canon. Looking at WarehouseExpress they want 45 quid for one battery yikes

There are replacement batteries to be had on fleabay for a few pounds each, obviously not offical Canon batteries. I can't see myself spending 45 quid per battery so whats the score with these other ones, anybody bought any 'non-official' type batteries for their digital SLRs ? Have they lasted as long ?

Some seem to have a diffeent mAh rating but the Voltage is the same ??

You get what you pay for, I'm willing to bet.

In my experience - Canon original batteries last a very good while.

Anything but - I'd proffer is a false economy.

I bought a Hahnel battery as a spare for my 40D from Warehouse Express. A lot cheaper than the Canon battery (I think it was around £25) and has a bigger capacity. Its had a lot of use and is still going strong.

I suggest you stick with a decent brand battery rather than a bargain bucket one - do bear in mind that Lithium Ion batteries can blow up/burst into flames if damaged and the internal protection circuit fails (I used to design mobile phones and we'd always have buckets of sand on standby when testing batteries...). I really wouldn't trust an unbranded Chinese battery.

A bought a cheapie spare for my G2, when the original gave up the ghost, which just happens to be the same type of battery as used in my 40D.

Electrically it has been absolutely fine. Physically, it must be a fraction of a mm bigger in one dimension, as it was a little bit tight in the 40D battery compartment when I tried it. Where the original just drops out when you want to charge it, the cheapie needs to be persuaded out.

Apart from that, the cheapie has been absolutely fine.

I've had 350D and 40D "non-genuine" batteries from 7dayshop and also eBay and they are at least as good if not longer lasting than the genuine ones. Last month 7dayshop were doing 2 40D batteries for £10. If they only last a year, you're still several years better off!

I picked 2 up too, great battery life and no problems at all.
