Does anyone have feedback if these are up to the job? There's one that'll support up to 3kg at about £55. I'm off in a few weeks to the Greek Islands and really didn't fancy hauling my tripod around with me.

If anyone has one, let me know if they're worthwhile.

Thanks.

I'd personally not worry about one.

I tend to use either a jacket or a cap to balance the camera on a wall / floor etc for any shots that would need a tripod when I'm out & about...

Looking at the size of a GorillaPod, you'll need a wall to set it one, so why not just use the wall in the first place?

I'd have reservations about hanging a D300 & lens from a small thing like a gorillapod, and watching it make an expensive noise as it hit the floorwink

Either I travel light (camera & lens) or it's all the gear - very rarely do I want to carry something "in the middle".

Besides, that's what the straighten tool is forwink

I don't know anything about the larger one, I have one for my compact and it is absolutely great, really useful anywhere (as they are advertised to be). It is not quite as useful as a full sized tripod in terms of height as the legs are quite short (unless you have some kind of surface to rest it on in which case that doesn't matter).
Also I'm assuming from your description you are looking at the SLR-zoom model which I'm certain you can get cheaper than £55, just searching in google shows some that are £30-40.

(PS the greek islands are really nice, my favourite was Paros - I'd say worth a trip if you are heading around there! Also the sunset at Oia - Santorini - is stunning and good photo spot but very crowded.)

The small ones for compacts are fantastic, but even though they say they can support the weight, the larger ones aren't so good. Maybe for a small SLR with a wide angle lens, but not for telephotos.

I have the SLR Zoom version and it's great. A nice lightweight tripod I can actually carry around. I've got a Manfrotto ball head on mine.

It's fine with my 40D and all my lenses, except the 100-400 which is really too heavy for it. That's fine for me, as at that range when I need a tripod, I use my proper full sized Manfrotto with greared pro head anyway. I just don't carry that one around.

I highly recommend adding a ball head to the SLR Zoom Gorillapod. It's very awkward without it.
