Are things getting silly now with point and shoot cameras hitting 10Mp or above?

What do you think is the optimum size 5,6 or maybe even 7Mp?

Answers on a postcard or even here if you wish.

The amount of megapixels has only a limited amount to do with the quality of the resulting image. The most important factor is the size of the sensor (minute in point and shoot cameras) and of course the quality of the optics. Lots of megapixels in compacts is just a con to get people to buy more cameras.

He did say 'point and shoot', the inference being small sensors.

Completely agree, but I overheard a conversation last week where a bloke was stating that his P&S was better than than DSLRs because he had more pixels... There is a lot of misunderstanding out there.

Am i right in thinking, More pixels on a small sensor = more chance of noise?

A simile:

a 6' tall bloke with a small "sensor"

a 5' tall bloke with a big "sensor" .....

You're going to get the quality from the big sensor, no matter how big and impressive the outside is!

the way i understand it:

the more megapixels you have the bigger your penis.

who the hell decided to call them 'megpixels' anyway??...what a crap name.

i had a richo grd with 6mp, fixed lens that was supposed to be good. the image quality was nowhere near my old 6mp dslr which had larger sensor and better glass. so i guess there would be no point having anymore pixels than that due to the limitations of the lenses and the sensors.
