The Olympus E-510 - anyone?
Discussion
The Olympus shows good value for money. They are standardised on the 4/3 sensor size which makes the cameras and lenses nice and small and light plus the E-510 and other Olympus DSLRs have dust reduction and image stabilisation built into the body so you get it on all lenses. The downside of the 4/3rds sensor size is they may exhibit more noise at high ISOs. How important that is to you only you can answer. If you rarely print over 6*4 it probably won't be an issue. Certainly the Olympus solution makes for an interesting possibility.
The most honest answer is to go to a camera shop and have a play with this, the Canon 400D and the Nikon D80 or D60 and see which you prefer to use. In reality all will be capable of great results.

I got the E510 with two lens kit. First DSLR but I looked at a few and spoke to a lot of people before I bought it. Really happy with it. Noise not an issue anymore than any other DSLR in this price range. Really packed with features that you may or may not use. Friend of my wife is pro photographer and he really rates it. The kit lens gets good reviews compared to others. Get down to Jessops and try a few out.
