Jenx, you've posted similar to the above on a number of other people's threads. Whilst I can appreciate that you might be frustrated at people not following the guidelines, the fact that they're posting pictures is more important to me than than the actual size of them. If others had the same "cant be arsed with the bullst" attitude that I had this morning there'd be very few posts.

Sizing to match PH's squish is quite a specific thing, which given I and possibly many other people use Flickr, makes it quite an intensive task to resize for each and every forum we may post on.

Maybe next time a quick "Andy, could you have a think about posting the Medium sized ones from your Flickr, rather than the Large" might work better for you, I and the other readers of the thread?

So, inspite of my hissy fit, here's the pics in Medium

And back to my original question.... I'm constantly struggling with panning and getting the effect of what I'm seeing into pixels. EXIF data for the above is typically something like

Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 260 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV

Anything slower and it's just blurred. Anyone have any tricks/tips? This was the first time I shot RAW, for no other reason that I fancied giving it a go

Try panning at 250 and go from there. Lower number, the more blur. 800 will be quite static.

As you point out, its the shutter speed that is stopping the 'pan' effect.
1/800th is really quite fast, i'd try something like 1/200th. On a hairpin this will still stop the motion, but if you pan with the movement on a fast straight you will get a decent amount of wheel / bg blur. Its a decent starting point smile

If you images are all blurred - are you selecting a focus point, af servo, etc.. ?

Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried a few different settings while setting up, and wasnt really happy with the results. AF (Lock) was on, as was VR and I was using a monopod

Couple that I've brought back from the bin as examples. I didnt like them as they were out of focus, and just not too sharp compared to others that were quicker.

I'd have bet this would be blurry winkbiggrin
270mm is a fair bit of zoom, makes things harder to pan smile
The 1/40th is probably the main reason for the lack of sharpness though, that is a really (!) ambitious shutter speed to be panning at, especially so with your 270mm zoom smile

300mm is a fair bit of zoom, as above, makes it a lot more difficult to pan. Saying that, 1/250th is a reasonable shutter speed for that sort of long range pan.
At a guess, are you using 'servo' af mode with a single af point selected ?
Maybe a quick burst of shots and you would have 'caught' a clear frame smile

Cheers.
