Apologies if this has been asked before - I did look through the resources sticky, but didn't find what I was looking for.

I'm keen to make much better use of PhotoShop. I can do the basics, but I'm fairly sure that I'm using a sledgehammer to crack a nut most of the time.

Can anyone recommend a really good, detailed but easy to understand (and that bit is crucial!) book that teaches novices to become competent in PhotoShop?

I am looking for a book, rather than a multi-media type course. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you smile

Rather than walk you through Photoshop, its a case of 'here is a problem, and here's how you fix it using Photoshop'.

Thanks very much for the advice. I've ordered a couple of books, based on your recommendations.

I have PhotoShop CS - so I've ordered 'PhotoShop CS for Digital Photographers' & 'Adobe PhotoShop CS Down and Dirty Tricks'(because I liked the title biggrin)

Can't wait to get my mitts on them!

Don't know about books, but the best things to master first is use of the levels command (Ctrl L) to adjust the histogram and how to use layers and masking properly. Everything is easy peasey after that! Don't go too overboard with the filters palette...

Thanks, Duncan. I can be a little heavy handed with some of the options. I'm getting better with more practice. I got a few tips from a magazine - so I've had a play with layers, levels, colour balance but I'm far from elegant in my attempts. I've also got a graphics tablet, which has made life much easier.

I went to Cornwall for the new year and got these two, which I PS'd (using the mag tips). I know it's a bit goth, the sort of thing that might have appealed when I was about 20 years younger - but the journey, rather than the end result, was the point of the exercise...... honest!

PS: Delighted to have found this part of the forum - thanks for being so welcoming smile

Now that's a good exercise - and teh result looks pretty good.

I have the "down and dirty" book; I don't use it very much but going through some of the tricks gets you really understanding Photoshop and the style is easy and witty, as with all SK books. His Lightroom one is great too for anyone that, like me, has paid for Adobe Lightroom and wants to get the most out of it.

It may be worth poining out PhotoshopUserTV at:

www.photoshopusertv.com

Where you get to see CK and others in action. I go through phases of watching it to give me a bit more confidence and knowledge from the tips they throw in (although some are just for the latest version of PS).

I've seen the Scott Kilby book in WH Smiths and intend to get it - looks like a good way to work through PS...

Not looked, but I didn't have a pen to write down his name in Smiths to then compare - so this thread very usefully reminded me of it wink

My books arrived today. Thrilled to bits with them! Tried a few of the exercises in the PS CS book, just to get a feel for it. Top recommendation - easy to understand, follow and dip into. I really like SK's style.

I'm gutted because I have to be in London for a couple of days this week, so won't have much chance to play. Roll on the weekend!

Thanks for the advice biggrin

A bit late for Caroline, but our library stocks some of the Scott Kelby books. Really handy to borrow and have a play, before spending the money.

Oh well - I think that they're going to be well loved and heavily thumbed. I'm trying to leave the Down and Dirty Tricks one, until I've worked through this one...... I must resist.....

Scho - A bible? School-boy error. An extra £1.99 would have got you the D&D Tricks book biggrin

I think The Bible is a work of fiction not entirely suited to Photoshop skills with the notable exceptions of cries like "Oh hell, how did I do that last time" or "Jesus! I didn't mean to hit that button and cause the PC to try to do that to such a big file eek "

I've just done a two-day course on using In-Design with our graphic designers at work (got them to show me a lot on PS too which was good), and they had the Bible. They'd just got them in lieu of a different book they'd used for CS2 that they thought was guff, and this one seemed pretty naff too!

Going to order the Kelby one...
