need a new lense for canon 300D

right, looks like i've been accepted to do some stock pics, i've got the kit lense that came with canon 300D (18-55mm) and it's ste! focus just isn't up to what i think is decent.
what i want is a 50mm but don't want to spend hundreds on it, any ideas what is really good but doesn't cost an arm and a leg...
OR is it that i'm not using the kit lense correctly?
i'm looking around on ebay and theres tons....unless someones got a good second hand one they wana sell?

How about the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens? Less than £70 brand new - one of the best value lenses around and its f/1.8!!!!
