Morning guys,

I have received info that someone may want to purchase one of my photos (a bit crazy since i am a complete novice, anyway.) I have no idea on what to do next if this person wants to buy it.

Is the picture still 'owned' by me, is there a rough charge?

Clueless, would be how to describe me right now - any advice?

Ta

John

P.s. the picture is here http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnirvineimages/2199...

Price usually depends upon usage, size & effort required to take it.
e.g. 6*4 unmounted unframed personal use only = GBP5
Double page spread, international magazine, advertising = GBP250
Above prices are only for example and not necc accurate.

If buyer wants large print, framed, personal use only, =GBP cost of production plus your profit margin.

In all cases you can provide the licence for use, and you can give buyer document to authorise usage.
E.g. Personal use means no unauthorised copying by any means & you can put a label on the back to say this.
For commercial use you can set the terms, e.g. number of issues of magazine in which publication is allowed, or length of time for which image can be used.
In respect of copyright, it is yours until you give it away or sell it, and you are free to do either, and if you want to sell it....its up to you & bear the above in mind
Enjoy
Mike

Found out first what they want the photo for. If its just so they can print it once for them, to use in a publication or to sell as framed prints etc.

Nice photo. Whatever you do, don't give them the full resolution original. If they want a print, have it printed for them. If they want to print in a paper or magazine you need to know more details.

Have chatted to the girl via email, she seen my photo on the BBC Scotland website and fancied it for her own personal use.

oo-er. hehe

What does that actually mean though? You could find her selling prints in a shop for £99 a pop - dont send the original file unless she hands over ££££'s

Lol...

yeh that sounds like the best plan, will see what size she wants the image to be, get it printed and will send it on to her.

DPS in an international advertising campaign should be a LOT more than £250. I'd want twice that for a DPS used just editorially in a major magazine. There's a not bad price guide on the NUJ Photography site here. smile
