I have a Nikon F80 with two lenses;
AF NIKKOR 28-105 1:3.5-4.5D
Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300 1.4-5.6D
I also have a Nikon Coolpix P1 digital compact which is excellent, as is the F80, but feel that the time is right to replace the F80 with a Nikon DSLR, although not sure which one yet.
I feel that I made a mistake when I bought it about 4 years ago, should perhaps have got the digital version then, but at the time I held the opinion that £ for £ the film version would give me better quality.
Looking around on places like ebay it looks like I'm going to be lucky to get even £100 for the F80 body, but can anyone tell me if I can use these lenses on a Nikon DSLR please?
Any other ideas on where I might get a reasonable price for the F80? It's unmarked and in good working order but not boxed.

Hi Kieth,
Your lenses [b]will]/b[ work on a Nikon digital body, but because the sensors are 2/3's the size of a negative/transparency you will get a +1.5 crop factor...ie your 70-300 will become the equivalent of a 105-450 smile

Martin.

What he said. You'll lose wide angle - 28mm will look like 42mm - so I'd suggest you sell the 28-105 at the same time as the body (seperately or with, your choice) and get the 18-70mm, which will do exactly the job your 28-105 did, but with AF-S.

Well unless you buy the D3 which is full frame sensor and one of the best DSLRs on the market. It is priced to reflect this however.

F80 - D3 is not a commonly recognised upgrade path smile

You should avoid the cheaper models (D40, D40x and D60) which will not autofocus those lenses since they don't have built in AF motor. Unless you're happy to focus manually of course smile

Good point - the 18-70 will AF but not the 70-300. Body-wise I was thinking D80 or D200 as a logical step from F80.

I've kept my F80 to go with my D80. Still shoot slides with it. It's a useful "backup".

Your 70-300 will be fine with the D80, but as others have stated, it's the wide angle you loose out on with the current sensor size of affordable DSLRs.

Some very useful information in those replies, thanks for that.
I'm now thinking that the way to go may be to sell the whole thing and start again, but where to get the best price and how much should I realistically be thinking of?

I'd go here: http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/photo/digicamera...

For another £9 you can get the 18-135mm lens. I haven't tried one but if you're looking for a 'one-size-fits-all' lens, and aren't too concerned about maximum aperture, it's an option worth considering.

By all means the keep the F80 for a while, but I bet 50p you never use it again!
