Some pictures from the weekend - my first attempt at action shots so feedback welcome..

Shame about the background being too busy in this one:

Some 'story pics' here - I perhaps should have set the camera to multi-shot for these..

and finally..

What are you doing in South Cerney :P That's my turf!

Nice pics btw, I keep meaning to go there with my camera on a sunny day!

Nice shots smile

I was just abuut to ask if that was S Cerney! Also my neck of the woods...
I remember about 10 or so years ago when that was a jet skiing lake. Used to spend quite a bit of time there.

Nice pics - you've captured some good action there;

some things to consider for another time:
Use a wider aperture and/or longer lens to throw the background out of focus which will help isolate the subject.

Also might be worth experimenting with a slightly slower shutter speed for some shots which will help with the panning effect, in bright conditions like this you'll need to add a Neutral Density and/or polarisor to get the light levels down low enough to allow this.

Fidgits, your timing is absolutely spot on for capturing the peak of the action, you just need a longer lens! Well done!

Yes it was South Cerney, its not far up the road from me and nice for a run out on a sunny day wink

The photos were taken with a 55-200 AF-S VR lens... the distance issue was really tracking, as I could frame them close but its hard to capture the action fully framed, as you can see with this shot:

I did try various settings, but generally went for fast shutter speeds, I didn't think to try it slower and do a track to blur the background... I will have to try that next time..

there is a little wake - if you look at the pictures you see they carve low into the water - it increases their speed and creates a wake they use to launch - but no, its no-where near the sort of wake off the back of a boat.
