Website critique
Discussion
Following on from 2jamesl's example, I gave my website a bit of a rework recently so would be interested to get some feedback/pointers...

I visit your site fairly regularly, and I don't really think I could critique anything on there. Technically it loads quickly, it's easy to navigate and its well organised.
As a photography site I would say that it stands out from the rest simply by being a) different and b) slightly quirky - and it's that that will keep people coming back.
Not to mention the photos aren't that bad either

download the free WSFTP from IPswitch.com, plumb in your user name, password and the domain or IP address and press go!
Thanks guys
The things I wanted to address in the update were:
The fact that people had to trawl through the menus to see what was new, so hence the recent shoot panel.
The ability to view the galleries as thumbnails, rather than change the galleries because I like to dictate the order of viewing
I decided to add the images to flickr so if anyone wants to view as thumbnails they can do it there. This has also helped to get more exposure as we saw with the UPS/Mopar thing the other day.
Make it a bit less stuffy.
Tidy up a few other bits and pieces.

It took me a while to learn all the bits and bobs Martin, I use an old version of Dreamweaver and get bits of code from http://www.javascript.com/ . The Java menu at the top was created with a tool called Xara Menu Maker, very handy. I still sit there scratching my head for ages at some of it when it goes wrong! If you need a site building I can recomened Simon Pollock over here... http://www.nefarious.co.uk/ ...he's a good guy or I'm sure there are some Pistonheaders who can help. I would offer but don't really have the time

Nice site Nick, and great shots!
I recon with a little tweak of the structure of the site you will be able to make the site extremely easy to navigate (without the drop down menu at the top).
I had a look at the html and it seems pretty bloated so had a play. I have reduced the html on the homepage from 29kb to 7kb and ditched the tables.
I'd be happy to help if you decided to go down this route

Thanks everyone

I like what you've done with some of it, some fo the banners are great. I need to be able to update it myself though so need to keep it within the bounds of my knowledge so I'll probably leave it as it is for now.

I was going to say that as an engineer anda bit of a logic freak with a bit of a hatrid flashy websites, its all a bit arty and form before function.
But actaully after about 2seconds of navigating around i actually cant fault it.
- Its logicaly laid out, nothink is more than a view clicks away, the layout works, its fast loading, and the photos are stunning.
Only things i would say is, the hyperlinks on 'sitemap' page arnt upto the standard of the rest of the site. And the home page is a little full/busy somehow for an entry point to what is otherwise such a cool/calm site.
But in general, a great site. Far more professonal than i think would ever have the time or inclination to sort myself.
