My Canon S70 packed up recently, sort of replaced it with a D70S and loads of assorted lenses and so on wink

But I still need a cheap compact that I can take with me everywhere!

Requirements:

  • under 100 quid
  • small
  • robust
  • decent image stabilisation
I've gone off Canon after my S70 jammed with no provocation and I see on the net I am not the only one. I have been looking at Panasonic (FX12 looks OK, pricerunner says Argos have it at 80 quid which is spot on but can't see it in the catalogue, well over 100 everywhere else), and Nikon Coolpix L10.

Any more suggestions?

OK, I think the Nikon L10-L14 are out as they use AAs and from bitter experience I hate them. Give me a rechargeable battery pack any day.

The Panasonics look well featured, but they look a bit big and plasticky frown

A sony cybershot? Mine is a w70 or something. Brilliant p&s, dunno which you could get on your budget but try one out and see if you like it. Mines all metal and nicely weighted yet its pocket size even in the padded case a bought for it. I even got a couple of nice shots with it at silverstone for the F1 testing. Also used a few times at partys with good results and my dad now preffers to take mine on holiday with him than his own.

the panasonic FX12 is metal bodied , runs a lithium-ion , and a leica lens

its a great little camera , you can do a lot worse but it will cost a little more than £100 but its worth the extra
