Hello again!!

Right as an altenative to buying one filter my dad used to be a keen photographer and being like me he would buy all the kit use it once and bung it in the loft. So ...

His filters are 49mm and my lense is 58mm. I have found the step down ring but obviously with anything like this there will be vignette effect on the pictures. Question is how bad?

Could I crop it down still to a sizeable photo? The adaptor is £8 and then I would have a choice of umpteen filters or buy one filter the correct size for about £20.

Has anyone any examples?

Thanks again ...

Well - it's going to depend upon what lens, and whether you're onto a cropped sensor.

For example, on a Nikon APS sized sensor I can get away with a bit of vignetting on a lens designed for 35mm (say a 14mm focal length with an extended lens hood, or a 20mm with a lens hood designed for a 28mm) since the central circle is less than the overall size. I can even stack a couple of filters on a 45mm AI-P lens that would otherwise probably vignette on a 35mm frame.

Why don't you give it a real-life try and see what happens?

Because I will have to buy it first and I will never get rich wasting money!!

Then that would have been half of the proper filter ...

Ok - let's put it another way.

If it were me I'd rig up a test using a couple of pieces of "blu-tack" or "sellotape" or something and give it a trial out of your window and see what happens - then I'd by the stepping ring or right size filter accordingly....

But what camera, what lenses are you thinking of using?

Good plan

The camera is only a fuji s6500 sort of bridge thingy with fixed lens ...

Ah, then I predict that you'll be finding that a smaller filter, or stacking will cause, at least some, problems frown

Why struggle with kit that's wrong when you can do it properly for a few £?

Here's my tip:

Step 1: Sell the stuff that doesn't fit
Step 2: Buy stuff that does fit.

I thought it was in the loft, ie not being used? Whatever, you'll still be better off doing it properly than struggling and worrying. This is digital - you're only likely to need a CP, and possibly an ND - the rest can be done in PS (IMHO)

Seriously dude, you're barking up the wrong tree. I used to use an adaptor to fit a 58mm filter on a 52mm lens and that was of course fine, but doing it the other way is just silly imo. By all means try as someone suggested cutting a hole in a piece of card and try shooting through it, but I just can't understand why anyone would bother trying to make do when the proper solution is so cheap and easy.

Well nobody told me it would be that clear cut did they?

If it is as simple as that then fair enough!!

It doesn't get much easier than 'buy stuff that fits'. 1 x CP, 1 x ND - now go to eBay and don't come back until you've got them! wink

Just replied to the other thread.

I'd suggest buying the right kit for the job personally.

You'll save a lot of money if you get an ebay account as bargains can be had. Decent filters from Hong Kong, including postage still work out ridiculously cheaper than buying them from this island we live on.

Agree with Gingerbread - probably half my kit has come from eBay, either new or mint s/h. If money is tight, sign up (or get a friend to do it for you!).

If you do a few tests before making a decision, remember to try at different apertures, as any vignetting will be more obvious at wider apertures.

you can get a cokin p adapter and kit for as little as 20 notes. No point at all in worrying about having to crop out vignette. But if you do get it, the lens distortion filter can help if its not 100% opaque, which is what you will get with a step down
