Had an DSLR for over a year now. 20D.

Brought a compact camera last week and thought I'd try it out at the Autosport/ Pistonheads show <- NEC.

So taking some pictures with flash on and flash off. Get home to look at the snaps. Took a lot of snaps just to try it out. Never going to look at them again really but you know how it is.

So i'm disappointed with the noise in these shots. Is this bad for a compact or am I just too used to a higher quality camera?

Click for full a much larger picture. Sorry for the big pictures.

Added the Exif data for the pictures.

I'm just a bit naffed off at the quality. These haven't been run through PS to remove any of the noise, straight from the camera.

Just seems a bit...shite?

I have to say that personally I wouldn't be happy with those. Compare to a photo taken on my own compact (a 4.0mp Canon Sureshot G2) on this link. http://www.88qv.com/LisaGT.jpg

Taken at 1/100 and f4.0 with ISO set to auto.

This was all on auto. May have flirted between auto mode and portrait mode or similar, but I'm ready to to throw in the towel and I've only had it two seconds.

You could try filtering software which will help

Your image

Reduced noise

Reduced noise

I use noiseware which allows single images to be filtered with the unregistered version.

I have noise ninja, I just don't want to have to run every image through shop. Choose the camera for the 28-200mm zoom on it, but if I have to put up with looking at every photo through a net curtain. I'll looise the zoom and buy a new camera.

I got my sister a R7 for christmas

I have had a little play with it and my findings are that it takes good pics, but ONLY when the Iso is right down (ie 64 or 100)

Auto mode, seems to shoot the ISO right up

I think those conditions are probably emphasising things. I've managed a couple of dreadful shots with my D300 in similar albeit worse conditions (horrible chroma noise patches). Not sure why, but maybe its due to trying to pick out detail in all that shadow. I also had some shadow enhancement mode on my d300 though which may have been the culprit.

Looks more like over sharpening than the noise I'd associate with ISO? Is there a setting in-camera for sharpening, if so may be worth backing it off a bit.
