Firstly, Happy new year to everybody, hope you all had a fantastic night! ( i certainly did) eughhhh. Anyway..

I am off to New York in February and theres no doubt in my mind that i will take around a thousand photos, i have around 8GB of storage on various SD cards and i have invested in every possible accessory that i can, lenses, flashes etc but theres one piece of equipment missing and i don't know if it even exists. Some kind of portable storage unit that i can keep all of my photos on temporarily, I'm unsure if computers are available in the hotel but something that i can just plug my cards into, put all of my photos on, then delete them off of the card and take more would be fine. So does it exist?

Thanks

Indeed it does and there's plenty of choice. http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/photo/flashcards... I have a cheap Vosonic XS2 Drive which rarely gets used these days as i tend to carry a lot of CF/SD cards instead.

As you're off to NYC, make this place http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ your first port of call and get anything for pretty much half the UK price smile

Alternatively, you could go to play.com and buy 5 or 6 2Gb SD cards at £14-99 each smile

Here's a thread on the subject

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I bought an Archos (www.archos.com) about 2 years ago with a 60gb hard drive which has been great for me. I can plug the camera directly in and copy the files over directly. It also can play mp4s so I have something to watch while I'm on a plane.

I'm off to NY in a couple of weeks and am planning to just dump them on the laptop at the end of the day off a card reader, but just incase Continental lose that, I was also planning on buying a few SD cards out there and copying to those. Seeing as it'll be the first time I've been there I'll probably be taking pics of anything and everything so want to make sure I've got the photos safe

I'm also thinking the same things

My laptop is archaic, so it has an external harddrive, so I really dont want to be taking that with me

what I've found on ebay..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/40Gb-PhotoBank-Portable-Driv...

and there is also this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SD-MS-MMC-CF-XD-Micro-Hard-D...

Which you buy as a case, then fit a laptop harddisc too

I think, I'm not going for long enough to warrant 40gb and, as I'm going to France and not a third world country, if I do need more memory, I will just buy some

so then, wheres the best place to buy me 3x4gb

I ended up getting a couple of DigiMateIIIs and putting 80GB disks in - you can format partitions >32GB FAT32 from Linux...

They did the job on my trip to Brazil - nothing flash, just reliable data dumps...

A nice laptop does this rather well whilst also allowing you to inspect them etc. Or the various epson devices etc. I also have a belkin unit for my ipod that reads a flash card onto that.

It works with RAW insofar as it copies from card to disk - no review facility for any files.

I took backups for other wedding guests too; it works fine with, at least, xD, CF, SD and a couple of flavours of MS.

Great piece of kit.

That looks identical to the DigiMateIII - same screen, same case - good price too, with a disk...

Do they handle raw files? It's a while since I had an Archos AV400, which I loved, but after 6 replacements in 5 months I gave up on them.

Which model do you have as I've started looking at them again.

I have a chunker but bulletproof iWith Phototainer at the moment which I picked up cheap second hand. OKish interface but it handles raw and you can plug the flash staright in the side.

[ETA] I forgot to state, that buying mine there and then adding a 30gb hard drive cost me £36, which is the same cost from your link with a 20gb disc and if you were eagle eyed, you could get a bigger harddrive for less money
