I am upgrading from a compact to a DSLR. The camera i am looking at is the Canon EOS 400D with 17-85mm F/4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens. Is this a good choice for a first DSLR ? I have been quoted £660 which includes £70 cashback from Canon. Is this a good price? Can anyone reccomend a good supplier? Thanks in advance for any advice. Roy.

If you look around, there are often some exceedingly good deals on 400Ds.

e.g. This week: "Canon Digital SLR Camera - 400D, EF-S 18-55 Kit £329 with cashback"
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=...

Park Cameras have a: Canon EOS 40D + EF-S 17-85mm IS at £948 inc vat. which brings it to £878 after redeeming the vouchers. ( http://www.parkcameras.com/ProductDetails/mcs/prod... )

Roy, cast your eyes in this direction. Don't ignore second hand options, look how much more your money gets you;

Rest assured buying the camera is only the start - you will be spending money on all that other stuff eventually, this package gives you a huge head start.

Thanks all. Looking forward to pressing the shutter and having the subject still in place, unlike my point and shoot i have now. I am sure i can pick up plenty of tips on here,there appears to be a wealth of experience here.

I did mention it in your original thread and took your silence as rejection - that'll learn me, since it now says "this topic has been removed" I guess you never saw it!
