Am i thinking of the right term?

I have been trying to take spme pics of the moon.. but can not get a decent sharp exposure..

i have a 40d with a 100-400L and a big manfrotto tripod, but still not as sharp as i would like... can this be due to vibration when the mirror moves?

Can you not lock the mirror and fire from a timer?

Look in custom functions, one is for mirror lockup.

Either lock it up and shoot normal, or with a cable release, or use the timer function (if its the same as my 350d), will give you a 2 second timed shot using mirror lockup.

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to photography, but i tried my hand at the moon the other night.

This was hand held at full zoom through my window. With my Cannon S2 IS.
Any good, or is there a lot of room for improvement?

It might not be mirror slap - what length exposure are you using? Remember the moon moves pretty fast, and so longer exposures will capture this movement.

I have the 40D and 100-400, what settings are you using? I always use mirror lockup (page 160 of the manual). Stick the camera on manual, shoot in RAW, use shutter release/timer, switch off IS on your lens, manual focus, remove any filters on the lens, and you should get something like this:

Here's the main exif data for that shot:

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 400 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

hth and good luck thumbup

edited to say, I did brighten this a touch in DPP, nothing else though..

Vitally important that - learnt it the hard way when shooting the fireworks over Edinburgh from Arthur's Seat. Thought I'd knocked my lens or something.
